HOW TO MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE BY 10, 100 OR 1000 by Luca Oliver-Favas
To help Multiply and Divide by 10, 100 or 1000 you need to understand PLACEVALUES • We know Numbers are made up of Digits: • The Value of a Digit is based on the number 10 • Each Digit has a PLACE • Each Place has a VALUE • Digits after a decimal point means Value is smaller than 1 (example 0.2) • [ The next slide will show the Value each Digit represents →
PLACE VALUES chart ←Example 91,762.584 Each digit has a different value: 90 thousand 1 thousand 7 hundred 6 tens and2 units 5 tenths 8 hundredths 4 thousandths Ninety-one thousand, seven hundred and sixty-two point five eight four
HOW DO YOU MULTIPLY BY 10, 100 OR 1000? • For example: 379.68 x 10 = 3796.8 • This is how you do it: • YOU ARE MULTIPLYING THE NUMBER BY 10 • As there is 1 zero in the number 10, you move ALL the digits to the LEFT by 1 Place • THE NUMBER BECOME 10 X BIGGER • THE DECIMAL POINT NEVER MOVES
REMEMBERWHEN MULTIPLYING DECIMAL NUMBERS: x 10 – MOVE ALL DIGITS 1 SPACE LEFT x 100 – MOVE ALL DIGITS 2 SPACES LEFT x 1000 – MOVE ALL DIGITS 3 SPACES LEFT
HOW DO YOU DIVIDE BY 10, 100 OR 1000? • For example: 379.68 ÷ 10 = 37.968 • This is how you do it: • You are Dividing the number by 10 • As there is 1 zero in THE NUMBER 10, YOU move ALL the digits to the RIGHT by 1 Place • THE NUMBER BECOME 10 X SMALLER • THE DECIMAL POINT NEVER MOVES
REMEMBERWHEN DIVIDING DECIMAL NUMBERS: ÷ 10 – MOVE ALLDIGITS 1 SPACERIGHT ÷ 100 – MOVE ALL DIGITS 2 SPACESRIGHT ÷ 1000 – MOVE ALL DIGITS 3 SPACESRIGHT
TEST YOUR BRAIN • 51.169 x 1000 = • 796.196 x 10 = • 4687.65 ÷ 100 = • 965 x 100 = • 3234 ÷ 1000 = • 91.6754 x 100 = • 6789.123 ÷ 10 = • Write the following number in words: 24,685.46
ANSWERS • 51.169 x 1000 = 51,169.00 • 796.196 x 10 = 7961.96 • 4687.65 ÷ 100 = 46.8765 • 965 x 100 = 96,500 • 3234 ÷ 1000 = 3.234 • 91.6754 x 100 = 9167.54 • 6789.123 ÷ 10 = 678.9123 • Write the following number in words: 24,685.46 Twenty four thousand, six hundred and eighty-five point four six
WELL DONE!Now you all know how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000.
