War of 1812 advantages and disadvantages Americans • Poorly equipped • Leadership weak • Small naval force However: • Performed fairly well in first naval battles • Patriotism British • Better navy/ships • Troops outnumbered American forces • Better leadership However: • Arrogant and over confident leaders and troops

  3. Hartford Convention • December 1814, Connecticut • Delegates meet to discuss trade losses • Possibility of secessionfrom Union • Finally voted for constitutional amendments to strengthen New England’s political power

  4. Treaty of Ghent • Britain & America agree war was useless • December 24, 1814 representatives meet in Belgium to sign treaty • Ends War of 1812 • Pre-war land boundaries in North America restored to U.S.

Battle of New Orleans • Battle even though peace treaty has been signed • December 23rd • 11,000 British troops attempt to take New Orleans from the south • Andrew Jackson and U.S. soldiers (4,500 volunteers) defend • January 8- • British leaders underestimate American soldiers and fighting skills • Battle over in 1 hour • 2,036 British casualties • 21 American casualties • Andrew Jackson becomes national hero

Panic of 1819 • 1816 period of growth for America • National pride is high • James Monroe wins election-5th president • Federalist party no more • Congress creates Second Bank of U.S. • people move west (MANIFEST DESTINY) • 1819- Called Panic of 1819 • first Great Depression in U.S. • Britain ask for payment on loans • public asked to pay loans • Public couldn’t pay debts, jobs and property lost • Collapse of economy

Missouri Compromise • 1819 -What about slave/free states? • Ordinance of 1787 -no state northwest of Ohio River slave state • Missouri applied for statehood • Northern Congressmen-no admittance as slave state-more power to South if allowed • South- “You can’t tell states what to do!” • Missouri Compromise 1820 • Missouri admitted as slave sate • Maine admitted as free state • Balance in Congress • Line drawn at the 36/30 parallel
