  1. A NEW CHANCE AT LIFE

  2. A National Problem • “Nationally 9.6 million abandoned pets and strays are put to sleep every year.” • All of these properties were in foreclosure, and most of the animals were injured, infected, dehydrated and starved nearly to death. • Abandoned pets increasingly are becoming victims of the struggling economy. In areas of the country hit hardest by the foreclosure wave, shelters are getting crowded, and in some cases owners abandon animals right along with the property • "We have had many people come to us and tell us they had lost their homes and were having to rent a house and couldn’t take a pet with them.

  3. Problem Statement With the crash of the housing market and high unemployment rates in Northern California, the cost of caring for pets is overwhelming for people. This leaves large numbers of pets in Northern California stranded and homeless. The lack of funding and boarding space in local shelters is leading to a huge number of animals being euthanized, along with neglect and abandoned animals right here in El Dorado, Placer and Sacramento Counties.

  4. A California Problem ‘Shelters are trying to keep up, but the spike in abandoned pets comes at a time when fewer people are adopting animals. Home sales are plunging to their lowest level in decades, and new home owners are often to seek a pet.’ USA Today ‘Legislative leaders agreed to shorten the holding periods for abandoned pets in California shelters from 6 days to 3 in order to reduce the budget deficit.’ ForeclosuresDeals.com ‘Last year over 400,000 cats and dogs were euthanized in California, a rise of 15% from 2004.’ ForeclosuresDeals.com

  6. Sacramento County Facility • Pet Intake: approximately 27,000 per year • 60 – 70 % are euthanized • Dogs have a higher adoption rate than Cats • Cost of Care: approximately $54.00 per day • Fee to adopt: • Female Dogs – $147.00 • Male Dogs - $121.00 • Cats - $81.00

  7. El Dorado County • 2449 intakes in 2007 • 3302 intakes in 2008 • 1021 cats euthanized in 2008 • 325 dogs euthanized in 2008 • Fee to adopt: • Cats 1 yr and younger - $50.00 • Cats 1 yr and older – $95.00 • Dogs younger 4 mo. - $175.00 • Dogs older 4 mo. - $125.00
