Where is it in the bible? • Mark6:13“And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.” • Mark 16:17-18“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name…they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover”
Where is it in the bible? Laying on of hands: • Luke4:40“Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with diseases brought them unto him; and he [Jesus] laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.”
Where is it in the Bible? • Acts 28:8-9“And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick… Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him…
How long have Christians been receiving this sacrament? • Since the time of Jesus. We have writing of a man named Origen who lived in the 200’s, who talks about confession and anointing of the sick… • Origen wrote that a Christian "does not shrink from declaring his sin to a priest of the Lord and from seeking medicine . . .
Who gives the Sacrament? • James 5:14-16“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. • Ordained ministers (Deacons, priests, bishops)
What do we receive in this sacrament? HEALING STRENGTH To give us strength to endure suffering courageously. It helps us carry our cross with Jesus. • Both our bodies and souls need healing. This Sacrament can heal sins, AND sometimes give miraculous physical healing, too!
This sacrament gives us the strength to carry our cross with peace and joy and not to be afraid when we’re suffering or dying, because god is with us.
Who can receive this sacrament? From the Catechism 1505 It’s not just for the dying! Anyone who is sick, old, has a chronic disease, or is going to have a big surgery should ask to receive this Sacrament! • The Anointing of the Sick "is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death…as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived."
What are the Form and matter? Form Matter Anointing with oil of the infirm • Words of the Minister: "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May the Lord, who frees your spirit from sin, save you and raise you up. Amen."
