  1. Education System in Andhra Pradesh Dr K. Lakshmi Narayana, IAS(Retd), Commissioner Technical Education, Andhra Pradesh

  2. Asking the Right Questions? • What knowledge do we expect students to acquire to be productive and effective in the workforce and as responsible citizens? What does it mean to say students are prepared for successful participation in the economy and society? • What skill and knowledge are necessary for all students regardless of their domain subjects? • What knowledge and skills do our students currently have when they leave college or university? • Which teaching methods are used and are they producing successful learner outcomes for all students? • What role can technology play in improving teaching and learning? What roles can it play in assessing learning?

  3. Need for Sound Education Policy The goal of sound policy should be to generate the motivation for institutions to create a campus culture that focuses on defining, measuring and improving learning – that is, creation of learned – centered environment. A commitment from faculty, administration and students is critical to move teaching and learning to the centre of the institution where all share in the responsibility for student learning. The role of policy is to help create that sense of shared responsibility for learning; it is not an easy task and not one that leads itself to traditional forms of state regulation.

  4. Role of Academic Leaders The academic community has also an important stake in helping policy makers create appropriate and effective modes of accountability. Academic leaders need to take the lead in creating meaningful assessments – assessments that capture the fundamental intellectual skills, knowledge, capacities, and attitudes that are essential to society – as well as other measures of accountability.

  5. New Initiatives by the Government of Andhra Pradesh • Establishment of: • Jawahar knowledge centres (JKC) • English Language Fellow Programes (ELF) • Distinct Resource Centres (DRC) • Teacher Training – Repositioning Higher Education in A.P. • Skill Development Centres (SDC)
