AVONDALE ROAD ITS • OVERVIEW • Location • Avondale Road between Novelty Hill Road and NE 132nd St. and • Avondale Way/Redmond Way between Avondale Road and 171st Ave NE. • Project Scope of Work • Fiber optic interconnect, upgrade signal controllers/cabinets, CCTV cameras, data collection stations, remote monitoring and operation. • Connecting Corridor Project • City of Redmond, Project Partner • ITS Projects in the vicinity • Avondale/Novelty Hill Road ITS • SR 202 Widening • Novelty Hill Road CIP • Redmond RITS

  3. PROJECTLOCATION

  4. EXISTING CONDITIONS • Avondale Road carries 50,000 vehicles per day south of Novelty Hill Road and 33,000 north of Novelty. • 20,000 of these daily trips travel on Avondale Way to and from Redmond Urban Center. • The corridor functions at a Level Of Service (LOS) F at several intersections along the corridor with existing traffic volumes.

  5. EXISTING CONDITIONS • Continued growth in northeastern King County and southeastern Snohomish County. • Avondale Road provides access to the Bear Creek Park and Ride Lot. • Currently the signals are interconnected between Union Hill Road and NE 104th St.

CONNECTING CORRIDOR • Avondale Road/Avondale Way provide access to Redmond Urban Center • Redmond Urban Center is projecting employment at over 10,000 and residential population at over 7,000 people • Woodinville Duvall, Novelty Hill Road and Union Hill Road all funnel into Avondale Road to access SR 520, SR 202 and Redmond Urban Center. • Avondale Road corridor carries traffic to/from SR 520 and SR 202 to destinations in Redmond, Bellevue and Seattle.

  7. CONNECTING CORRIDOR • The Avondale Road ITS project is a critical link to ITS projects in the area, either funded or proposed. • Avondale/Novelty Hill Road ITS project includes: • Fiber optic communication hub • High speed communication to the Avondale corridor • High speed communication to Redmond, WSDOT and King County Traffic Control Centers. • Avondale Road ITS project will expand this communication to the north on Avondale Road and south on Avondale Way

ITS EXPANSION ITS Projects in Area • Avondale/Novelty Hill Road ITS • WSDOT SR 202 • Novelty Hill Road ITS • Redmond ITS (RITS) ITS Components • Fiber interconnect • High speed communication between centers • High speed connection to the corridors • CCTV cameras • Remote monitoring and operation.

ITS EXPANSION • King County’s Traffic Control Center (TCC) was completed in May 2004. • The TCC equipment was designed with expansion capabilities and to meet future ITS needs in the County. • The Avondale Road ITS corridor will tie into existing communication equipment for operation from the TCC.

AVONDALE ROAD ITS BENEFITS • Reduced travel time throughout the corridor • Reduction in number of stops • Reduction in pollutants due reduced stops and travel time. • More efficient lane utilization • Incident/Event management, remote operation of the corridor • Improved incident response • Improved Safety • Data, video, operation sharing between agencies • Information sharing with the traveling public, informed route choice via internet cameras and future variable message signs.

  11. PROJECT COST/SCHEDULE Project Cost The requested grant funds combined with local match from King County and the City of Redmond will provide for design and construction of a complete ITS system on Avondale Road between Novelty H Road and NE 132nd St and Avondale Way/Redmond Way into Redmond Urban Center. Local Match $300,000 Grant Request: $1.9 Million Total Project Cost $2.2 Million Project Schedule Design Start: December, 2008 Construction Start: December, 2009 Construction End July, 2010
