  1. Pan-IRIS New Initiatives 2012 IRIS CoCom Face to Face Meeting Chicago, IL April 9-10

  2. Data Quality Enhancement • Lead: Data Services • Other key program(s): IS (strong involvement), EPO (potential involvement) • Summary: IRIS-level push to continue developing open data of highest quality. Establish and demonstrate metrics and procedures for QA. Leads to next quantum leap in research-grade resources. Some components may be useful for EPO activities.

  3. Next Generation Instrumentation • Lead: Instrumentation Services • Other key program(s): IDS, EPO, DS (potential involvement) • Summary: Provide streamlined data collection system for field use. Start with identification of next generation datalogger/digitizer system with potential telemetry capabilities, mindful of recording several other data streams beyond standard ground motion and new modes of communication and experiment design. Extend to sensor technology as it emerges. Focus on setting standards and design innovation. For this proposal, could handle spec, design, prototype, and pilot array experiment (not full instrument inventory).

  4. International Large-Scale Research Projects • Lead: Instrumentation Services • Other key program(s): DS, EPO, IDS • Summary: Stimulate and plan one or more large-scale projects, including Array of Arrays, Subduction Zone Observatory, and Polar Networks. IRIS is the natural global leader to help the community move forward with these types of projects. Requires international collaboration and participation, and excellent example of the need for direct connections across all IRIS programs. Could leverage Next Generation Instrumentation initiative. For this proposal, funding for implementation of project is not appropriate, but this effort should lead groups to other sources of funding.

  5. International Development Seismology • Lead: International Development Seismology • Other key program(s): EPO, DS, IS • Summary: Develop a pan-IRIS, service-oriented structure for international engagement in new data and research resources, as well as direct social impacts to society, including disaster mitigation in developing countries. IRIS is the natural global leader from the scientific community to engage in such activities. Focus on results-based approaches to acquire diversified portfolio for both IRIS and community members.

  6. Undergraduate Engagement Through Research and Education • Lead: Education and Public Outreach • Other key program(s): DS, IDS, IS • Summary: Utilize the vast data and educational resources of IRIS to tie more directly to undergraduate education from both the teaching and research aspects. Develop deeper connections with IRIS consortium members to draw from broad range of current efforts underway within the community. Expand current efforts related to EarthScope and USArray. Could tie in with Data Quality Enhancement initiative. Use a combination of core efforts along with thrust to continue diversified external funding.

  7. Taming the Internet • Lead: Education and Public Outreach • Other key program(s): DS • Summary: Develop best approaches to provide and deliver IRIS-related content across a broad spectrum of web resources, including Google, Wikipedia, and IRIS Data Services. Emphasis on guiding the user directly to current and correct content, along with current research activities, hand-on data, etc. Develop new, user-friendly methods for nonspecialists to access and utilize IRIS data.

  8. Documentation and Publication of Best Practices • Lead: IDS / EPO / CA • Other key program(s): DS, IS • Summary: As a global leader in scientific data collection and dissemination, it is imperative that IRIS maintains a leadership role in aiding the community with best practices in the technical, operational and training aspects of seismic (and other) data collection and distribution. At present, IRIS does not have community- or public-friendly access to “best practices” documentation. For instance, IDS efforts in training and technology transfer provides one clear effort that can reach across all programs. This proposal is an opportunity to develop better this public face to IRIS, which will also demonstrate key leadership beyond the next 5 years. Links to a “Taming the Internet” initiative may be appropriate.
