Marches Access Point in Kington, Herefordshire, England provides access to computers, training courses, photocopying, printing, website hosting, and technical support. They support older people, the unemployed, lone parents, people with disabilities and learning disabilities, and the community. MAP collaborates with various groups and businesses. Learnings from a project Unlocking the Potential of 50+ with PISCESWM showed similarities and differences between England and Czech Republic. Emphasis on equality and diversity laws is noted. Suggestions include working with specific groups, challenging assumptions, and promoting group-led initiatives.

How did we come to work with this project • MAP worked on a project Unlocking the Potential of 50+ with PISCESWM in 2010 • I gave a presentation in Prague in 2010 about our contribution to the project • Jarka attended the presentation
What have we learned • The economic and financial situation is the similar England and Czech Republic stemming from the 2008 financial crisis • We both have high youth unemployment • The UK has a long tradition of volunteering in all aspects of community life
What is different • The UK has Equality and Diversity laws – everyone must be treated fairly • 9 Protected Areas are: • Age • Disability • Gender Reassignment • Marriage and Civil Partnerships • Race • Religion and Belief • Sex • Sexual Orientation
Reflection • Looking at what we do through the eyes of others • How can we achieve better outcomes • How can we help others to achieve what they want to achieve
Ideas for you to take away If we were to give you some thoughts, they would be: • Work with specific groups • Challenge assumptions • Group led – their voice
How to do this • Create the environment for change • Raise pubic awareness • Join together to lobby for change • Monitor current practice • Create the common cause between different groups facing dicrimination
