Basic Timeline for PhD Studies First Year – Basic Foundation/Knowledge and Skills Coursework Rotations/Select Advisor Select a Graduate Program Second Year – Specialized Knowledge and Skills More Coursework Research Meet with Advisory Committee Petition for PhD Candidacy/Candidacy Exam Third Year and beyond - Research Dissertation research

  5. What Courses am I required to take? GS21 1018 Foundations of Biomedical Research (GSBS Core Course) GS21 1014 Ethical Dimensions of Biomedical Sciences GS21 1151 Science Writing (or a Program-based writing course) GS00 1514 Tutorial Research Experience (3X) Plus: Courses required by your graduate program (usually 3-4 courses). In most cases all coursework will be completed before PhD candidacy Remember: You must register each semester, even if you are not taking a didactic course!

PhD Student Milestones The First Year Fall Semester Tutorial Research (First Rotation) Foundations of Biomedical Research Ethical Dimensions of Biomedical Sciences Spring Semester Tutorial Research X 2 (Second and Third Rotations) GSBS Science Writing / Program-based writing course Graduate Program Coursework End of Spring Semester Identify a Research Advisor (PhD Mentor) Join a Program Summer Semester Form Advisory Committee

First Year PhD Students are Required to take the Core Course Exceptions: Medical Physics – Do not take the GSBS Core Course Neuroscience - Core Course is optional – Discuss with Dr. Bean Quantitative/Computational students Have the option to take GS21 1018 Foundations of Biomedical Research for Quantitative Students with permission from OAA. Doubts about which Program you’ll join?  Take the core course

Tutorial Research Experiences – Lab Rotations • Purpose: • Broaden Research Experience • Select a Research Advisor for Dissertation • Fall Tutorial – September 15 – December 12th • Before then: • Find a tutorial advisor • Resources: • Seeking Students List • Faculty Directory (Research Description) • SciVal – research info, federal funding • Advisors in Office of Academic Affairs / Program Directors

Academic Advising Today 2:30 PM – Informal Q&A Session Bunny Perez – Computer lab: help with Registration Brenda Gaughan and Bill Mattox – Available all week All students should have a 30 minute advising session at OAA before September 5th. We will again schedule short advising sessions with everyone at end of Fall Semester.
