VAP Requirements • 3.0+ GPA (Must maintain a 3.0 GPA every year) • Level 4/5 FCAT Scores • 9th Grade: Geometry Honors or Algebra 2 Honors • Application (available in our Front Office and on our website under “Forms & Documents”) • Teacher recommendations in English, Math and Science • Remain with cohort group for duration of program

  3. Pre-AP AP Diploma • AP Diploma Requirements • Take at least 6 AP courses • Score 3 or higher on each exam

Space Coast Jr./Sr. HS  (VAP)  AP Diploma Program Admission: 7th grade – 3.0+ GPA, Orleans-Hannah scores, FCAT levels 4/5: Admissions: 8th grade requirement: 3.0+GPA, FCAT Level 4/5 –eligibility for Algebra 1 Honors or Geometry honors and Spanish I or French I, in order to begin the AP World Language course sequence. (VAP Application packet) ; 9th grade (HS) requirement: min. 3.25 GPA, FCAT levels 4/5 and passing EOC as required in their grade level. HS VAP students must be able to meet the AP Diploma requirements by graduation and the AP Diploma contracts must be signed by student and parent. • -Study Skills, time management and research skills are presented during 9th and 10th grade years in seminars. BCC Success Strategies class is the most recommended 1st course students should take ASAP • -Students must take at least six AP credits and earn a 3 or higher on each exam to earn a VAP AP Diploma and  maintain a min. 3.25 GPA annually in HS. • --The availability of individual courses is subject to sufficient student interest and teaching staff considerations. • --BCC courses can be taken during the summer and in addition to the school year with qualifying GPA and Test Scores or FLVS Classes.

Do Students Learn More at Highly Selective Colleges? • At highly selective schools, students have high-achieving peers who will challenge each other and keep the level of learning high. • When students are capable of high-level work, the courses match the level of the students' abilities. Thus, highly selective colleges often have courses that are more demanding than at less selective schools. • The most selective schools tend to foster more interaction between students and their teachers. The AP Advantage • Research has shown AP students are more likely to graduate from college in 4 years. • AP students stand out in the college admissions process. • Curriculum at the high school level in AP is equivalent to corresponding university courses. • 31% of colleges and universities look at AP experiences when determining scholarships.

Students scoring a 3, 4, or 5 on a 5 point scale may receive college credit or placement for each AP course. • Research has shown that students who enroll in AP classes have a higher GPA in college than those who take dual enrollment courses. • AP students broaden their intellectual horizons by engaging in intense discussions, solving problems collaboratively, and learning to write clearly and persuasively. • Select universities look specifically for AP experiences when choosing students during the admissions process.

If awarded college credit, a potential savings in tuition costs of $2600 per course (3 credit hours at a top university) or $13,500 for 5 courses. • As long as students have taken the appropriate prerequisite classes, no testing is required to enroll in an AP course. • AP teachers receive specialized training from the College Board. • The best reason to take an AP course at Space Coast is being taught by the most dedicated and inspiring teachers on our staff.

Who designs the AP courses and exams? • AP committee members currently teach at dozens of the nation’s top colleges and universities, including: • Dartmouth College • UCLA • Hamilton College • University of Texas at Austin • Michigan State University • University of Virginia • Princeton University • Yale University • Spelman College • Information from Connect to Success @ collegeboard.com

AP Awards • AP Scholar: Granted to students who receive a 3 or higher on three or more exams. • AP Scholar with Honor: Granted to students who achieve an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams. • AP Scholar with Distinction: Granted to students who receive an average grade of 3.5 on all exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on 5 or more exams. • AP State Scholar: Granted to one male and one female student with grades of 3 or higher on the greatest number of exams, and then the highest average grade (at least 3.5) on all exams taken. • National AP Scholar: Granted to students in the US who receive a grade of 4 on all exams taken, and of 4 or higher on eight or more exams.

Brevard Public SchoolsAP Diploma • Students must complete 6 full year AP courses (6 credits) or a combination of semester and full year courses totaling 6 credits. • The 6 credits must be from 3 different subject areas of the 5 available. • Students must score a 3 or higher on all exams taken. • Students must complete an application by the end of the first semester of their senior year. • Due to exam scores being released in July, candidates will be recognized as potential diploma recipients at graduation and be honored at a later ceremony if all requirements are met.

AP Course Availability • Courses offered are based on student requests. • A minimum class size of 15 to 20 students will be required in order to offer an AP course. • “Independent Study” is only offered if the course is not offered on the master schedule and with Principal approval. These students will be expected to teach themselves with minimal instructor oversight.
