  2. Women’s Rights Movement Suffrage–therighttovote • The leaders • Elizabeth Cady Stanton – she conducted a women’s rights convention – the Seneca Falls Convention (N.Y.) • Susan B. Anthony • Their efforts led to the 19th Amendment.

  3. Literature of the United States • Noah Webster – tried to unify Americans through language - producing the dictionary. • Henry David Thoreau – writes Civil Disobedience - influences Martin Luther King. • Edgar Allen Poe – famous for horror short stories and poems like The Raven. • Henry Wadsworth Longfellow – simple style wrote Paul Revere’s Ride.

President Andrew Jackson • First president from the “West” • The “Common Man” president • His presidency becomes known as Jacksonian Democracy • Jackson is the president best associated with the Spoils System • Jackson had to confront the Doctrine of Nullification • He carries out the Indian Removal Act(Trail of Tears)

  5. Dred Scott Decision • The ruling- the Supreme Court said according to the Constitution slaves were not citizens. • Since he was not a citizen he could not sue. • The Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional in violating Slave owners property rights protected in the 5th Amendment • Background – Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri taken to the Wisconsin Territory (free territory) and brought back to Missouri. • He sues claiming he is free for being in the Wisconsin territory.

  6. Confederate States of America • Montgomery, Alabama became the first capitol of the Confederacy. • Jefferson Davis was chosen as the president of the Confederacy.

  7. General Robert E. Lee General Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox ending the Civil War.

  8. Abraham Lincoln • Elected the 16th president • Gave the Gettysburg Address • Put the Emancipation Proclamation into place.

  9. John Wilkes Booth Assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in Ford Theatre.

  10. Carpetbaggeers and Scalawags Scalawags – people from the South who supported Reconstruction. Carpetbaggers – people from the North who came south for opportunities.

  11. Ku Klux Klan • This organization used violence to intimidate blacks and remove from power those in the Reconstruction governments.

  12. Buffalo Soldiers • The United states Army was sent to protect settlers and fight Indians. • Known for their bravery the Indians named the black soldier units the Buffalo Soldiers.

  13. Wounded Knee • Ghost Dance – the Sioux believed this religious ritual would bring back the buffalo and return the Indians back to their lands. • It was believed Chief Sitting Bull was using the Ghost Dance to start an uprising. • He is killed in an attempt to arrest him. • Many Sioux left the reservation to Wounded Knee Creek. • A massacre occurs by the army. • Wounded Knee is considered the last battle of the Frontier Wars.

  14. Alexander Graham Bell • He invents the telephone.

  15. Robber Barons andtheirmonopolies • John D. Rockefeller- Standard Oil Company, he dominated the oil industry. • Andrew Carnegie – U.S. Steel, he dominated the steel industry. • Cornelius Vanderbilt - railroads

  16. Gospel of Wealth • Andrew Carnegie believed people with wealth had a responsibility to use it to help the poor. (referred to as philanthropy) • He called this idea the Gospel of Wealth.

  17. Horatio Alger • This famous writer wrote children’s stories. • In his stories people gained wealth through hard work and diligence. • He inspired a generation which believed they could achieve and succeed through hard, social class did not matter.

  18. Upton Sinclair • He wrote The Jungle. • He intended to show the terrible working conditions of the Chicago meat processing plants. • Instead, people read of the rotted, diseased, rat crawled upon and processed with the meat they (people) ate.

  19. Ida Tarbell • As a result of her father being put out of the oil business she writes the History of Standard Oil exposing its business practices.

  20. Ida Wells • This black author writes about lynching (murder by mob). • Through her efforts lynching decreases.

  21. Theodore Roosevelt • Republican president • Progressive • Referred to as “Teddy” • Known as the “Trust Buster” • Policies called The Square Deal • Established a National Park system- land set aside from development. • Promoted the Pure Food and Drug Act (after reading The Jungle).

  22. The Election of 1912 • William Howard Taft – Republican Party and running for a second term. (He was Roosevelt’s VP) • Theodore Roosevelt – Progressive Party (also called the Bull Moose Party). He forms the party when he does not get nominated by the Republican Party. • Woodrow Wilson - Democratic Party • Woodrow Wilson wins the election due to Taft and Roosevelt splitting the Republican vote.

  23. Booker T. Washington • Founded Tuskegee Institute • It became an important center for technical education in the South.

  24. W.E.B.DuBois • The first black Ph.D graduate from Harvard. • Wrote papers attacking Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of accommodation. • Began the Niagara Movement • Helped form the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

  25. George Washington Carver • Famous for his experimentation with peanuts, soybeans and cotton. • By developing hundreds of uses for these crops he enabled Southern farmers to grow other crops for profit besides cotton.

  26. Spanish – American War • Theodore Roosevelt created a voluntary unit called the “Rough Riders.” • He/ they become famous for their charge up San Juan Hill.

  27. John Jay Secretary of State John Hay gets nations to agree to allow nations to freely trade in China. This policy is known as the OpenDoor Policy.

  28. William C. Gorgas Panama gets its independence from Columbia. The U.S. gets to the right to build a canal across Panama. Diseases kill workers and stopped previous attempts at construction of a canal. William C. Gorgas develops methods for eradicating mosquitoes which spread malaria and yellow fever.

  29. World War I • WWI begins when GavriloPrincip(Serbian nationalist) assassinates Archduke Francis Ferdinand visiting Bosnia, one of his provinces.

  32. F. Scott Fitzgerald • He and his wife Zelda were symbolic of the excesses of the wealthy at the time. • The Great Gatsby is his most famous work and it portrays the time period.

  33. The Harlem Renaissance Writers • Langston Hughes – wrote about the black experience in America. • Zora Neal Hurston – inspired black female writers. Their Eyes Were Watching God is her best known work.

  34. Cars • Introduced by Henry Ford the car is now affordable to the average person. Also created the assembly line. ModelT

  35. Sacco and Vanzetti Trial • Their trial is seen as the symbol of the Red Scare. • They were convicted of murder and robbery and executed. • Many believe they did not get a fair trial and were executed because they were immigrants, atheists (no belief in God), and anarchists (no belief in any form of government).

  36. Herbert Hoover • Was president when the Depression began and was blamed for it.

  37. Franklin D. Roosevelt • FDR defeats Hoover • Has a legislative plan called the New Deal • Established radio broadcasts called Fireside Chats.

  39. Germany • Adolf Hitler • National Socialist or Nazi – the race (Aryan) was more important than the individual. • To Hitler the Aryan race was superior to others and deserved to conquer other nations.

  40. Union of Soviet Socialist RepublicsUSSR • Joseph Stalin • Communism – (in practice) the government controls or owns everything and gives to the people what it thinks they need.

  41. Japan • Hirohito was its emperor but the country was ruled by a military dictatorship. • An island nation with few natural resources it utilized military conquest to industrialize.

  42. Tuskegee Airmen • Black pilots trained in Tuskegee, Al. • They served with distinction in North Africa, France, Germany and Eastern Europe.
