Thursday 10/7/2010Do Now What is the objective of today’s class? What are the 2 main categories of mixtures? What is an example of a heterogenous mixture? When is your super easy pop quiz?
Class Checklist • No students were talking during the review of the Do Now, during teaching time (note-taking) and during closing. (2x) • Every student was on time • No curse words were used inside this room. • Every student remained in his/her seat until independent practice. • By the time Ms. Chan goes over this list, every table has 2 chairs behind it. • All students followed the class rules. (Students did not argue with Ms. Chan; everyone tried their best) • Every student brought THEIR OWN pencil and paper to class. • Every student followed directions the first time they were given. • Every student completed ALL the class work (including: Do Now, notes, class work) • No student had his/her head down during class. • It took Ms. Chan no more than 10 total seconds to get the entire class’s full attention (eyes forward, mouths shut).
Review Do Now • What is the objective of today’s class? • What are the 2 main categories of mixtures? A: HOMOGENOUS HETEROGENOUS • What is an example of a heterogenous mixture? A: Italian salad dressing. • When is your super easy pop quiz? A: Today, after taking notes.
Announcements • 2nd PERIOD: • Your test corrections need to be in the Assignment Box by the end of this period or I will not give you the extra points.
Announcements • When I give you back graded work, don’t give it back to me unless I write on your paper: “Finish for more points!” • Keep your work in a folder. If you need one, come back after school and I will give you one.
Announcements • Pop quiz is TODAY after you take notes. It will be an open note quiz. • Progress reports will be distributed tomorrow. • Your first notebook check will be next FRIDAY. More details on Tuesday next week.
Agenda • Review mixtures and solutions orally • Notes on solutions (1 slide) • Review Video. • Physical Properties (2 slides) • Pop Quiz! • Homework: On the whiteboards.
REVIEW (don’t copy this down) • Matter • Anything that has MASS and takes up space (VOLUME) • Mixture • combination of 2 things not chemically bound together • Solution • a homogenous mixture of 2 substances evenly distributed • Solute (ex: sugar) • Solvent (ex: water)
Notes begin on the next slide. • Remember: you are responsible only for what is BOLDED and UNDERLINED.
10/7 Notes *Solutions • Saturated solution – the max amount of solute has been dissolved • Supersaturated solution – more than the max amnt has been dissolved. Precipitate is formed at the bottom of the cup.
*Physical Properties • Characteristics of matter that can be observed using your senses; the substance is NOT changed into something different. • Used to separated mixtures. • Include: • Color • Viscosity (resistance of a liquid to flowing) • Luster (shininess) • Ductility (ability to bend/stretch w/o cracking) • Density • What is a physical property of your lab desk?
*DENSITY • How much matter is in a certain volume of a substance • Equation:D = m/v Density = mass/volume • SI Units:g/cm3 • NOTE:1 cm3 = 1 mL • Liquid water has a density of 1 g/cm3. • If something is MORE dense (ex: brick), it sinks. • If something is LESS dense (ex: ice), it floats.
Both the sponge and the brick have the same volume. Which is MORE DENSE?
POP QUIZ!!!(15 points) • You may use your OWN notes. • 15 questions – each worth 1 point. • When you are done, raise your hand and I will collect the quiz from you. • Next, copy down the homework for tonight (in red, on both sides of the whiteboard). • Good luck!
Homework – each worth 5 pts. Both are due tomorrow (Friday). • ACHIEVE 3000 (the website is: www.empower3000.com. This week’s article is about wildfires). • In your textbook: • Pg. 26, # 5 • Pg. 44 # 5, 6 • Read Pg. 45-49. Write down 6 of the physical properties discussed.
