Metadata (1) • Records stored in a central database • Available to all CORC members for downloading and local augmentation • Also in WorldCat (public service?) • MARC21, Dublin Core, Resource Description Framework record formats • Interchangeable input/output • Library of Congress standards and rules

Metadata (2) • Create new record automatically from URL • Limited success • Constant data templates • Duplicate content for multiple records • Online authority checking (LC) • Automatic URL checking and notification • Pathfinders • Web pages with dynamic content derived from metadata, including links

Consortium • Pilot, in agreement with OCLC • Funded by SLIC • To investigate use of CORC for collaborative cataloguing in Scotland • Similar to proposal requested and accepted by SCURL • Currently involves CDLR, SLIC, East Dunbartonshire Libraries, and Napier University Learning Information Services

  6. Potential (1) • More effective use of cataloguing resources • Avoid duplication, improve consistency • Common standards • Few legacy problems (for the time being) • Interoperability; e-GIF • Isolate online resources for users • Instant gratification • CAIRNS electronic miniclump

  7. Potential (2) • Opening up access to Scotland’s culture online • Global audience via WorldCat • Establishing ‘authoritative Scotland’ in cyberspace • Personal and corporate names; places; events; subject headings
