Clinical Inquiries Evidence Tables
What is an Evidence Table? • A tabular description of the study, including: • Citation • Population and Setting • Interventions, Exposures, Tests • Outcomes measures • Results • Estimates of effect and Significance level • Study quality
Why Use an Evidence Table? • They make your work easier • A manageable summary of studies • To compare studies by characteristics • Prevent errors of interpretation • Increase clarity of analysis • Plan a statistical analysis
Examples of Evidence Tables • NICI, Type 1 DM • OHSU, Drug Effectiveness Review Project • AHRQ EPC, Episiotomy Evidence Report • CRD Report, Chronic Fatigue Interventions
AHRQ EPC Episiotomy Report http://www.ahrq.gov/downloads/pub/evidence/pdf/episiotomy/episob.pdf
Interventions for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Bagnall, et al. NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, CRD Report 22, 2002.
Customizable Evidence Tables for CIs • Three customizable evidence tables: • 1. Treatment or Prevention • 2. Prognosis or Etiology • 3. Diagnosis or Screening • Categories on tables are for general guidance, change as needed for your CI question
Constructing an Evidence Table • Columns • Populations • Interventions • Outcomes • Rows • Studies • Sub-groups of populations • Categories of interventions
Tables for CIs • Distilled evidence tables can be used in the CI • Tables can save room and give clear information to the reader • 3 Examples: • Effectiveness of diet and exercise to prevent DM • Signs and symptoms of pertussis • Harms and benefits of ASA for health adults
