  2. 1. Why did the colonists like self- government? (p.117) Colonists liked self government because it allowed them to make their own laws and decisions.

  3. 2. a) Who was Colonel Richard Nicolls? (p.118-119) Colonel Richard Nicolls was an English colonel sent to New Netherland by the Duke of York in 1664.

  4. 2. b) Why did he come to New Netherland? (p.118-119) Colonel Richard Nicolls came to New Netherland with warships to order Stuyvesant to give up New Amsterdam to the British.

  5. 3. What did the English rename the colony of New Netherland? (p.119) The English renamed the colony of New Netherland New York, after the Duke of York.

  6. 4. Who were the Huguenots? (p.123) The Huguenots were French protestants who left France to find religious freedom. They founded the towns of New Rochelle and New Paltz in New York.

  7. 5. a) Who was John Peter Zenger? (p.124-125) John Peter Zenger was the printer and editor of the New York Weekly Journal. He was arrested for publishing articles against Governor Cosby.

  8. 5. Why was his trial important? (p.124-125) Zenger’s trial was important because it introduced the idea of freedom of the press.

  9. 6. Where did many of the goods/services that were provided in colonial New York come from? (p.128) Many of the goods/services that were provided in colonial New York came from the New York colony (and other colonies).

  10. 7. a) What is a tyrant? (p.117) A tyrant is a leader who rules harshly. b) What did Peter Stuyvesant do that made many people consider him a tyrant? (p.117) Stuyvesant was a very strict leader. He made laws that controlled the prices of goods, and another law that forced everyone to go to church on Sundays.

  14. 11. What was the Albany Plan of Union? (p.135) The Albany Plan of Union was a plan developed by Benjamin Franklin. It called for the uniting of all the colonies under one government to defeat the French.

  15. 12. a) What was the Proclamation of 1763 about? (p.137) After the French and Indian War, the British proclaimed that all the lands to the west of the Appalachian Mountains belonged to the Native Americans.

  16. 12. b) Why did the Proclamation of 1763 anger many NY colonists? (p.137) The Proclamation of 1763 angered many colonists because they felt that it took away their rights as British citizens to travel and settle where they wanted.

  17. 13. Where were the leading centers of trade in colonial NY? (p.129-130) The leading centers of trade in colonial NY were New York City and Albany.

  18. 14. Were there slaves in NY in the early 1700s? (p.123-124) Yes, there were slaves in NY in the early 1700s.

  19. 15. What jobs did people who worked on farms have? (p.131- 132) People who worked on farms worked in the fields, ran mills, put up barns and fences, raised livestock, and took care of the manor houses.

  20. 16. What did the Dutch fear the English government would do? (p.116) The Dutch feared that the English government would take over New Netherland.

  21. 17. How did the English gain control of New Netherland? (p.118-119) The English gained control of New Netherland when King Charles II of England gave his brother, the Duke of York and Albany, all the land between the Connecticut and Delaware Rivers. In 1664, the Duke of York sent warships and Colonel Richard Nicolls to force Stuyvesant to surrender New Amsterdam. They threatened to attack. Stuyvesant eventually surrendered and signed a peace treaty.

(p.119-120) There continued to be Dutch influence on the English colony of New York because Stuyvesant accepted a peace agreement that allowed Dutch colonists to stay, and keep their homes, businesses, and farms.
