  1. Florida’s History of Improvement Over the last two decades, Florida’s commitment to high standards and accountability has resulted in a dramatic move from the bottom to the top in national rankings.

  2. Why are standards important to businesses? • How our education system prepares students directly impacts Florida businesses’ ability to find qualified talent in an increasingly competitive global economy. • What Businesses are telling us: Many high school graduates are unprepared for college and the workforce. Students aren’t gaining the critical thinking, communications and problem-solving skills they need to succeed in the real world.

  3. Why are standards important to businesses? Our students are not keeping up with competition from developed and developing countries. Higher education standards work toward helping students graduate from high school career and college ready.

  4. Why have standards? Standards ensure all students have access to quality content at each grade level and in each content area.

  5. How do Florida Standards differ from previous standards? The Florida Standards establish a sharper focus on key topics in each grade allowing educators and students to go deeper into the content, and students to better understand concepts and tackle more complex content as they progress.

Business groups can collectively provide support and become involved in local and community activities to ensure changes are made — and implemented — in the education system. Businesses can keep the momentum going as states face competing priorities, limited budgets and leadership turnover.

  10. How can businesses get involved? • Engage your employees by: • sharing news articles about local schools or districts in your company’s newsletter or listserv. • hosting quarterly brown bag lunches to share information and keep employees updated on developments in education. • Consider sharing business expertise with local schools and school districts as they align their processes and systems with college and career readiness.

  11. How can businesses get involved? • If you are speaking at a community event or to a business audience, include a call for action on supporting The Florida Standards in the speech. • Identify opportunities for you to write a letter to the editor or an op-ed piece in local or national publications.

  12. Business leaders are critical supporters of career and college-ready education because they understand what is required for employees to succeed and advance within their companies.
