  1. 2nd Quarter Warm Ups Remember to respond to all prompts with a minimum of a half-page on college-ruled paper.

  2. Journal 1- 4th Quarter

  3. Journal 2

  4. Journal 3 What does it mean to be ROMANTIC? What images, films, novels, actions, events, people, etc. come to mind? Explain your answer.

  5. Journal 4 PART 1: What was your favorite thing to “make believe” as a child? Why? When did you stop playing “make believe?” Why do you think you stopped? PART 2: How are the following clips ROMANTIC? Peter Pan The Polar Express

  6. Journal 5 Visualize a place you really love. Be there. See the details. Now write about it. It could be a corner of your bedroom, an old tree you sat under one whole summer, a table at McDonald’s in your neighborhood, a place by a river. What colors are there… sounds, smells? When someone reads it, he/she should know what it is like to be there. He/She should feel how you love it, not by your saying you love it, but by your handling of the details.

  7. Second Person (uses you)

  8. Journal 6 What is your motto? A motto captures an individual’s attitude toward life in one phrase. The Ancient Roman poet Horace advised, “Never despair.” The contemporary comedian Woody Allen summed up the secret to success as: “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” Ralph Waldo Emerson’s motto “Trust thyself” sums up the essence of the ideals expressed in his essays and lectures. What is your personal motto? To get started, consider the best advice you’ve ever given a friend. Write your motto and explain why this is your motto. After 5 minutes, survey your classmates and add their personal mottos, noting your favorite.

  9. Journal 7 Read the article “The tale of one woman’s radically simplified ‘built-it-myself’ life” Record your reactions as you read the story. Why did Dee Williams choose to downsize? Do you think this way of living is too drastic? Could you do it? How does this type of living exemplify the Transcendental way of life?

  10. Journal 8

  11. Journal 9 If you were unbelievably wealthy and were planning to throw a party this weekend, what would you include in your party and who would you invite? (No alcoholic beverages allowed!)

  12. Journal 10 “’We’ve met before,’ muttered Gatsby. His eyes glanced momentarily at me and his lips parted with an abortive attempt to laugh. Luckily, the clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers and set it back in place. Then he sat down, rigidly, his elbow on the arm of the sofa and his chin in his hand. ‘I’m sorry about the clock,’ he said.” (Fitzgerald 86/91) How does Gatsby act in this selection? What is the significance of the clock- why not another object?

  13. Journal 11 Freewrite

  14. Journal 12 What was your favorite part of Gatsby (scene, character, quote)? Explain your answer.

  15. Journal 13 There’s “fun scary” (walking through a haunted house, screaming through a horror movie, riding a roller coaster) and then there’s “scary scary” (being in a car accident, getting caught in the ocean’s riptide). Describe the scariest experience you’ve ever had. Was it fun scary, or was it really terrifying? I need to see someone’s journals! 

  16. Journal 14 Have you witnessed unequal treatment of people around you? Who is being treated differently? Why do you think people treat this person or this group of people differently? OR Have you ever been treated differently than others? Why? How did this different treatment make you feel?
