Freud was very influential in the field of psychology • Although many of his ideas aren’t thought to be accurate today, he helped to introduce the idea that personality and behavior can be analyzed scientifically. • ALSO Freud helped to develop compassion for people who had psychological disorders instead of simply seeing them as “weak”

  11. Causes and Solutions of personality problems • i. Anxiety caused when parents treat children with indifference or harshness • ii. Children also become hostile when they are treated with hostility • iii. Love can offset effects of painful childhoods. (This is different from what Freud thought)

  13. Horney was different from Freud • Believed that people could recover from painful childhoods. Love later in life could help them to have meaningful relationships later in life.

  18. Alfred Adler • a. Reason for development to overcome feelings of helplessness • b. Inferiority Complex: people are motivated by need to overcome feelings of inferiority • c. Compensate for obstacles. Example: If you are small as a child you might try harder to compensate for this by trying to be very athletic. • d. Sibling Rivalry (we’ll talk about this later) • e. Self Awareness
