  3. What will IRO do for you? • Enhances your public speaking skills • Makes you a better researcher and writer • Takes you all over the country • Introduces you to new topics and people • Looks good on a resume • Helps you make friends

  4. What Is MUN? • Model UN is a cooperative activity with three core values • Speaking: Formal Debate • Writing: Resolutions, Directives, Press Releases. Policy, Law • Research • You will act as a country/person and represent their values and priorities in an international committee • Two main types of committees: • General Assembly and Specialized • Crisis

General Assemblies and Specialized • The heart and soul of MUN • GAs: Often made up of real UN committees, very large • DISEC, ECOFIN, SOCHUM, SPECPOL, Legal • Specialized: Wide variety of governing bodies and other leaders of organizations. Medium to Small in size. • Committees designed to solve a wide reaching problem through joint documents known as resolutions. • Debate and teamwork heavy

Crisis • Committee as a collection of leaders running a shared organization to achieve something or solve problems. • Cabinet of a country • Board of trustees • Rebel leaders in a revolution • Committee is consistently updated through drops • Committees undertake actions through mini-resolutions called directives • Personal actions can be taken through notes • Still a lot of debate • Smaller committees, usually representing people and not whole countries
