Sustainability types • Institutional: based on need satisfaction and goal maximisation within three systems: the economical, environmental and social; • Ideological: based upon ideologies such as modern environmentalism, liberation theology, radical feminism, eco-feminism, eco-socialism, and Marxism; • Academic: based mainly on economic, ecologic and sociologic disciplines.   3. Sust. definitions convergences • Stakeholder inclusion and engagement; • Equilibrium among economic, environmental, and social aspects; • Inter-generational equity (equilibrium among longitudinal aspects, i.e. short-, long- and longer-term perspectives).

  4. Representations • Representations and images can improve learning and understanding of new or complex concepts (Carney & Levin, 2002; Hilligoss & Howard, 2002; Sankey, 2003; Schnotz, 2002; Stokes, 2001); • Images tend to be easier to remember than non-image data; • Visual representations help to communicate with images concepts that are difficult to express clearly and succinctly with words and to make them more tangible.

Venn diagram drawbacks • Lack of continuity (i.e. long-term perspective); • SD consideration as highly anthropocentric or compartmentalized; • Areas lying outside of juxtaposition considered either as partial sustainability (P) or notat all related to sustainability; • Implication that Sustainability is only the union of the three aspects.

Concentric circles drawbacks • Lack of continuity, (i.e. long-term perspective); • SD consideration as highly anthropocentric or compartmentalized; • Implication that there are parts of the environment that are not part of society and parts of society that are not part of the economic aspects; • Indication that there are clear separations of the aspects (subsystems).

Conclusions • SD appears to be an abstract and complexidea to the typical citizen; • Diagrams and images have been developed to help people grasp the different aspects of SD and sustainability; • A new way of seeing sustainability is proposed: the two tiered Sustainability equilibria, where the topics in each aspect interact with each other, but also with those of other aspects, today and tomorrow.
