  1. Civil appeals Appellate Courts are courts which hear appeals. The main appellate courts in the civil justice system are High Court, Court of Appeal and The supreme court. • Court of Appeal. • Hears appeals from High Court and the county court. • Permission is required for a case in the Court of appeal for major cases. • Term is known as ‘Leave to appeal’ • - granted by the lower court who heard the original case or by the Court of Appeal. High Court. Supreme Court. Queens Chancery Family Bench Division Division Division • Final court in the English legal system. Hears appeals from Court of Appeal and sometimes from High court. Permission is required to have case heard in the Supreme court Commercial Court - Deals with insurance, banking, and other commercial matters • Admiralty court • Deals with shipping cases • Examples – damages caused by collision in sea, sunken ships Trials heard by Law Lords.
