Supplemental Program Changes for English Language Learners (ELL’s), K-6: • District staff has been exploring options in providing English language learning to K-6 English learners through an approach that will enhance the overall learning experience • The goal is to increase the reclassification of English learner students

  3. Supplemental Program Changes for English Language Learners (ELL’s), K-6 continued: Recommendation: • Staff is recommending Rosetta Stone as a supplemental program to assist English learners in acquiring English Funding: • No cost to the general fund • Catagorical Title III funds will be used

Executive Summary Intensive Intervention for Grades 7-12 Process • ELD Advisory Committee members were convened to: • Review district data and state English Language requirements • Develop a District lens which resulted in the development of a Rubric to be used to evaluate Intensive Intervention Programs • Review & select an Intensive Intervention Program for 7-12 grades • Committee reviewed (3) Intensive Intervention Programs on- April 26, 2011 • Curriculum Council approved- May 5, 2011 Recommendation Approve Program For: • Intensive Intervention English Learners 7-12 • Intensive Intervention Students ( EO, EL, IFEP, RFEP)

  9. Developed District Lens: Purpose: • To develop a profile of LUSD’s needs and resources for English Language Learners • To analyze current practices • To analyze current English Language Learners assessment data • To develop an evaluative tool used by Committee Members in evaluating programs

Teachers’ Reasons for Selecting Read 180 • Differentiated Instruction (multi-levels in classroom) • Instant feedback • Data driven for teacher instruction and effectiveness • Phonics instruction though high level literacy • Useful for one to three periods a day (up to 2.5 hours) • Targets English Language subgroups • Program provides explicit systematic instruction for all levels of proficiency • Easy access to teacher to modeling, lesson plans, & grouping through technology

READ 180 comes in three “Stages” of instruction. • Stage A for upper elementary students • Stage B for middle school students • Stage C for high school students • A “Stage” includes instructional materials to support reading levels beginning at foundational reading and extending to grade level content. Each stage is differentiated by engaging and motivating content that is relevant to the struggling reader’s grade level.
