  2. REVIEW: What Does a Comma Signal? • A comma signals a pause. (It tells the reader to slow down briefly, but then keep going until the thought is completed.)Because the Browns scored a lot, they won the game.

  3. STOP! REVIEW: What Do Periods Signal? • Periods signal a full stop. The idea is complete. The Browns won the game. It was so exciting.

  4. Review: What Is a Complete Sentence? • A complete sentence has a SUBJECT and a VERB (PREDICATE) that work together to make a COMPLETE THOUGHT. • Mary got a puppy. • The Browns won the game. • Reading is good for you.

  6. Remember… a sentence is like a bicycle- it needs both wheels to work.

  7. ONE MORE TIME: SENTENCE TEST – a sentence must have ALL THREE to be a complete sentence: • Does it have a SUBJECT? • Does it have a VERB (predicate)? • Is it a COMPLETE THOUGHT? It is a fact that…

  8. So, what is the problem? • Sometimes our sentences are NOT complete thoughts= FRAGMENTS: • Mark and his friends. • Because I was hungry. • Even though I studied for two hours. Subject + Verb + Complete thought

  9. A fragment means a wheel is missing from the bicycle.

  10. To fix a fragment, make it a complete thought. • Mark and his friends went to Dairy Queen. • Because I was hungry, I ordered a pizza. • I ordered a pizza because I was hungry. • Even though I studied for two hours, I still failed the test.

  11. What’s missing from these fragments? Glue the chart on your opposite DTAP page near the top and circle what is missing.

  12. Fix the fragments… Change each of the fragments from the chart into complete sentences by adding what was missing. Write your new, complete sentences under your chart on your opposite DTAP page. Watch punctuation and capitalization.

  15. Run-on What Is a Run-on Sentence? • A RUN-ON is caused by running one sentence (complete thought) into another, without putting any punctuation in between. • The CAVs won the game it was so exciting. 2 complete thoughts

  17. A Comma Splice Run-On: A comma splice is putting a poor, weak comma in a run-on sentence to separate two complete thoughts BUT it is STILL a RUN-ON. , sentence sentence COMMA SPLICE The CAVs won the game, it was so exciting.
