  1. 21stcentury Acts – foundations for church growth. Anointed in Leadership

  2. Matthias – Acts 2:15-26 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, ‘Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.’

  3. Matthias – Acts 2:15-26 (With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) ‘For,’ said Peter, ‘it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘“May his place be deserted;    let there be no one to dwell in it,” and, ‘“May another take his place of leadership.”

  4. Matthias – Acts 2:15-26 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.’

  5. Matthias – Acts 2:15-26 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, ‘Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.’ Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

  6. 1. Why is leadership so important? • Leadership is God’s gift to the church But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why itsays: “When he ascended on high,    he took many captivesand gave gifts to his people.” So Christ himself gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Eph 4:7-13)

  7. 1. Why is leadership so important? (a) Leadership is God’s gift to the church • We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. • (Romans 12:6-8)

  8. 1. Why is leadership so important? (b) Leadership is God’s chosen strategy... • ...for bringing about His purposes on earth • ‘Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is heaven’ • HOW? Leaders anointed and empowered by the Holy Spirit • e.g.Abraham, Moses, Joshua, the Judges, David, Nehemiah etc • e.g.The disciples, Peter, Paul

  9. 1. Why is leadership so important? (c) What do leaders do? • They go ahead • They set direction and vision • They have followers • They teach and train others • They mobilise and coordinate teams • They take people / organisations from where they are to somewhere else i.e. They change things

  10. 2, How are leaders called? • Two patterns • Matthias • Paul

  11. 2. How are leaders called? (a) Charismatic anointing (Paul) • PAUL – Acts 9 • THE DISCIPLES Matthew 4:18-20 • PETER John 21:17 • BARNABAS AND PAUL Acts 13:2.

  12. 2. How are leaders called? (b) Godly wisdom (Matthias) • Matthias was chosen by a consideration of • The scripture • Practical wisdom • Prayer • Providence • DEACONS – Acts 6:1-4 • ELDERS – Acts 14 • JAMES – Acts 15

  13. 3. The credentials for leadership • 1 Tim 3:1-12 • Almost entirely those of character • Above reproach • Faithful to his wife • Temperate • Self-controlled • Hospitable • Able to teach • Not given to drunkenness; not violent, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money • Not a recent convert • Handles family well • Good reputation with outsiders

  14. 4. The spirit of leadership • Servanthood– Mark 10:42-43 • Wholehearted, as unto God – Colossians 3:23 • Diligently – Romans 12:8 • Skilfully – Exodus 31:1,2

  15. 5. How to treat leaders • 1 Tim 5:17-19 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honour, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For Scripture says, ‘Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,’and ‘The worker deserves his wages.’1Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.

  16. In conclusion • God’s Kingdom comes, God’s will is done on earth as it is in heaven by a combination of the outpoured Holy Spirit and anointed leadership.

  17. In conclusion • (i) Is God challenging you to see your leadership role/position differently? • (ii) is God challenging you about taking up a leadership role? • (iii) is God speaking to you about your attitude towards leadership?
