Modals. Modals are words that add a specific meaning to the sentence. ال Modals هي كلمات تضيف معنى محدد الى الجملة. There are five modals:. 1- Can: (يستطيع) it gives a meaning of ability ( قدرة ) . Example: I can read English.

  1. Modals Modals are words that add a specific meaning to the sentence. ال Modals هي كلمات تضيف معنى محدد الى الجملة.

  2. There are five modals: 1- Can: (يستطيع) it gives a meaning of ability (قدرة ) . Example: I can read English. 2- Must : (يجب) it gives a meaning of obligation (اجبار) Example: You must fast in Ramadan.

  3. 3- May: (من المحتمل) it gives a meaning of probability(احتمال) Example: The actor may act in the new film. 4- Should: (من المستحسن) it gives a meaning of advice. (نصيحة) Example: You should study for the test. 5- Will : (سوف) it gives a meaning of future actions.(مستقبل) Example: I will visit Amir tomorrow.

  4. Modals and Semi- Modals

  5. Semi- modals give the same meanings just as the modals. We can replace each modal with its semi- modal in sentences. Example: • I can read English. • I am able to read English. • You must fast in Ramadan. • You have to fast in Ramadan.

  6. Notice that after a modal we don’t use the preposition (to). However, after the semi- modal we do use (to). Example: • I shouldstudy for tests. • I ought tostudy for tests. Notice also that the verb after a modal or semi- modal is a base form verb.
