What advantages did the colonists have throughout the war? • The Colonists had many advantages over the British that eventually led to victory: • A strong sense of pride to defend their rights • An alliance with France • Received donations from Colonists • More familiar with the land than the British were

What was the Battle of Guilford Court House? • General Nathanael Greene’s Colonists defended the area in Guilford County, and British General Charles Cornwallis arrived at the area and fought. • Both sides fought for hours, and the British eventually won the battle. • Because they lost so many men, a British politician said, “Another such victory would destroy the British army.”

What led to British surrender? • General Cornwallis brought his men to Virginia, expecting to overtake the area. • General George Washington was already ahead of him, organizing a “trap” to converge on the British. • Cornwallis was left with no choice but to surrender. • Overall reason for Colonial victory: British had lost too many men and the war was no longer worth it.

  5. What was the Treaty of Paris? • In 1783, the British and Colonists signed this document to officially end the conflict, giving the Colonists their independence.

  6. What hardships did N.C. face after the war? • North Carolina needed to deal with heavy war debt, setting up an education system, and figuring out how to make money.
