  3. Purpose • Consider a model of community based training in eccentric reading involving: • Visibility • Glasgow macular disease society • Gartnavel hospital low vision clinic • Glasgow Caledonian University eye clinic

  4. Methodology • Recruit learners • Low vision assessment by optometrist • Agree programme of training • Adult learning model • Measure subjects performance before during & after training

  5. Training • Explain techniques & discuss limitations • Agree goals with learner • Preferred retinal locus (PRL) • Optimal magnification • Steady eye strategy (SES) • Weekly training session/daily practice

  7. Conclusion • Functional reading is achievable for many people with central vision loss • Eccentric reading can provide a useful addition to other means of accessing information • Learners consistently reported increased confidence & independence
