Replete with ample change and opportunity Caused people to fear for the loss of  regional identities To preserve these identities, regionalism developed The newly constructed transcontinential railroads contributed to this fear as they unified the cultures of the country Historical Context of the Times

Changes also created disorder in society The world appeared to be a harsh, uncaring place Spawned naturalism A type of writing in which writers were concerned with the impact of social and natural forces on the individual A reaction to negative changes in society Historical Context of the Times

  4. Main Characteristics of Regionalism • Reflected local customs, land, character • Celebrated diversity • True-to-life portrayals of people • Emphasis on everyday experiences • Recorded without romance or sentimentality

  5. Main Characteristics of Naturalism • Showed impact of social & natural influences • Portrayed victimized people • Corresponded with new political, economic, and scientific theories • Believed in survival of the fittest and progressivism • Harsh reality • Nature is indifferent
