Northern Ontario – Key Demographics • Youth out-migration was 10% from 2000-2005 • 15% in the North are over age 65 (13% in the South) • Approximately one-third of residents are in the City of Greater Sudbury and Thunder Bay • Almost 50% of communities have populations under 2,500 • Over 19% of the population is Francophone (4% in the South) • Over 10% of the population is Aboriginal (1.5% in the South) Distribution of Communities in the North

  4. Northern Ontario – Education Status • Northern Ontario’s population 20 years and older: • 33% do not have a Secondary School Diploma (vs. 26% provincially) • 31% have a Trade Certificate or College Diploma (vs. 27% provincially) • 11% have a University Degree (vs. 19% provincially)

Northern Labour Force Characteristics • Unemployment Rate = 7.4% (vs. 6.3% provincially) • Youth Unemployment Rate= 16% (vs. 13% provincially) • Employment in the North has declined since 2003 (10,800 estimated jobs losses) • Top Northern Ontario Employment Sectors: • Public Sector = 29% (vs. 21.5% provincially) • Trade Sector = 16.3% (vs. 15.6% provincially) • Manufacturing = 10% (vs. 16.6% provincially) • Primary Industry= 6% (vs. 0.5% provincially)

  6. Sector Specific Issues - Mining • Employs over 14,000 people with another 1,800 involved in exploration – over $1.4B in labour income • Over 80% of all mining jobs are in the North • Industry is facing a looming skills shortage

  7. Sector Specific Issues - Forestry • 28% of those employed in the forestry industry are in the North • 14 of the province’s 17 pulp and paper mills are in the North • Nearly one-third of communities are dependent on forestry • Over 8,000 workers have been directly displaced due to plant closures
