Do Now • Please copy the following words into your notes • Secretin- a hormone that stimulates basic pancreatic juices • Gastrin-a hormone that increases the production of digestive juices • Cholecystokin- a hormone that stimulates digestive pancreatic juices and bile release • Pepsin-an enzyme that digests proteins • Amylase-an enzyme that digests carbohydrates • Lipase- an enzyme that digests lipids

  6. Pharynx • Where swallowing happens • Soft palate BLOCKS nasal cavity • Tongue pushes food back and blocks oral cavity • Epiglottis blocks trachea (breathing) • Food forced into the esophagus

  7. Esophagus • Moves food to stomach using smooth muscles

  8. Stomach • Main location of chemical digestion • Some mechanical when stomach churns • Three main cells • Chief cells: Make pepsinogen • Parietal cells: Make hydrochloric acid • Mucus cells: Make mucus

  9. Pepsinogen…? • Inactive (doesn’t digest things) until it meets acid • Turns into PEPSIN • Pepsin digests proteins (peptides)

  10. Ever smell something and get hungry? • Gastrin is triggered when we see, taste or smell food • Gastrin stimulates stomach juices • So… you feel hungry when you think of or see food!
