  1. Chapter 7 notes Lord of the flies

  2. Recap… • Having found no beast at Castle Rock, the boys continue their search as they head toward the mountain. However, Roger’s sighting of fresh pig droppings causes the boys to change their course, and the hunt for the BEAST is transformed into a hunt for a more attainable prey…a pig.

  3. Things to notice… • CHARACTERIZATION - Ralph: subtle changes are taking place. He is feeling the weight of responsibility. Ironically, as he “matures”, he reverts to more “childlike” – less civilized?—behavior. He returns to biting his nails, a habit he gave up a long time a go. He worries that he’ll be sucking his thumb next.

  4. Things to notice… • THEME – breakdown of socialized behavior • all the boys except Piggy and Simon have begun to revert to less socialized behavior: don’t wash themselves; bite their nails; suck their thumbs • the excitement and BRUTALITY of the hunt incite the boys to bloodthirsty passion. Even Ralph is capable of giving in to the urge toward violence and destruction

  5. Things to notice… • RITUAL – the hunt • the hunt starts out as a boyish attempt (the excitement of the moment), but this goes much deeper • the pig and beast blend into ONE ENTITY • the dance of the hunt gains almost religious significance • it’s not a dance where the pig is vanquished, but one in which the BEAST is vanquished • this ceremony gives the boys a sense of control over things that are out of their control
