  1. Unapproved IEEE IT (Information Technology) Strategy – 2005

  2. Mission • Provide a comprehensive and integrated set of electronic products and service offerings that meet the current needs of IEEE Members, Customers, Volunteers, Staff and other stakeholders, and positions IEEE for continued full participation in the professional communities of the future

  3. Vision • Information and Communications Technology (ICT) will be the key driving mechanism in delivering IEEE's value over the coming decade. • Enhancements will include modifications of the peer review process, video conference style interactions, electronic support for meetings, and new forms of interaction enabled by the Internet.

  4. Vision (Cont’d) • Future growth of IEEE Societies will utilize "instant community" facilities to initiate and expand their activities. • The IEEE's ability to deliver products that integrate it’s organizational units (OU’s) within its Societies and Regions and the many other suppliers of related information will be the foundation for engineering innovation into the future.

  5. Strategic elements • Top level services • Robust member/user database & authentication system • Individual user profiles • Integrated user web interface with access to user selected content links as well as system generated ‘suggestions’ • Chosen services 24x7 tier 1 • Nimble and flexible response with reuse

  6. Strategic Elements (Cont’d) • Enterprise Architecture Approach • Common vocabulary for key data elements • A forum or process to view business functions spanning OU’s • Clear definition and understanding of authoritative data sources and where replication is needed • Integration mechanisms: standardizing services, platforms, etc

  7. Strategy Concepts • Anticipate and align with IEEE Strategy • Leverage IEEE’s Resources Effectively • Embrace the emerging heterogeneous diversity of sources • Right Information to the Right Person at the Right Time • Web Based Environment Evolution • Prepare for the Future • Apply Good IT Management Principles for New Projects

  8. Strategy Concepts Enterprise Architecture Process to Manage

  9. Strategy Concepts Enterprise Architecture Framework Solution Information Business Technical Based on TEAF

  10. Strategy Concepts Enterprise Architecture (EA) pilot – Credit Card Processing • Reference Architecture defined – 12/2004 • Surveyed current Ways IEEE handles credit card transactions across the organization • Identified 7 different ways IEEE handles this service (7 major services targeted based on transaction volumes) • Renewal and other membership web applications • Cybercash – Verisign • ShopIEEE • Payflowpro – Verisign • ICM (Conference management) • Authorize.net (External vendor Service) • Computer Society Web apps • Paymentech • Documented business process flow and data flow for current reference architecture

  11. Strategy Concepts Enterprise Architecture (EA) pilot – Credit Card Processing • Target Architecture defined – Feb 2005 • Documented Proposed Business flows • Documented Proposed Data Definition • Identified and documented Application needs and Infrastructure needs • Key Highlights – Target Architecture • Use of YourPay service from FDMS ( First Data Merchant Service) • Benefits • Maintains current longstanding relationship with PNC bank and FDMS • Favorable Transactional and other costs • Common business processes across organization • Improved scalability and manageability • Next Steps: • Evaluate BMS implementation against Target Architecture during Discovery phase • Evaluate need for WebService to support multiple applications under BMS umbrella and beyond

  12. Strategy Concepts IT Strategy Focus Areas • Define Strategic Architecture components • Identify Key Application, Technology and Infrastructure needs • Siebel infrastructure • Enhanced Messaging Framework (New Initiaitive) • Online Communities and Collaboration • Web and Internet infrastructure (New Initiative) • Next Steps: • IT team to outline a view for review • IT Strategy sub team to review, comment and outline next steps
