  3. What else should you know? • Include 3 to 6 references on your reference page • ASK permission before you use a person as a reference • Ask the person what they would say about you – make sure that the person will give you positive recommendation • Organize with the strongest reference 1st • Examples of references: former and current employees or managers, co-workers, colleagues in the field, professors, deans

  4. What else should you know? • Give a copy of your resume to those people who you use for references • Let your references know what type of job you are looking/applying for whenever possible

  5. What should the reference sheet look like? • Put your resume header on your reference sheet • For each contact include • Person’s name • Business • Address • Phone number • E-mail • A sentence explaining how you know the person

  6. More Reference Sheet Information From: http://www.umd.umich.edu/fileadmin/template/emsl/files/Career_Services/SAMPLE_REFERENCE_SHEE1.pdf • References are to be printed on quality resume paper. • Use the same stationary for resume, cover letter, references, and thank you letter with matching envelopes. • Format your reference sheet similar to your resume, using the same style and size font. • A total of 3 to 5 references are optimal. • Always ask permission from a reference before giving his/her name to an employer. • It is a good idea to give your references a copy of your resume. • Be sure to use your references’ titles. • Give only professional addresses and telephone numbers. • The most effective references are education employers, university supervisors, and class cooperating teachers from student, teaching, and building principals who have observed you during student teaching. • You may also ask college professors or advisors who are familiar with your work. • Never use a family member as a reference, even if you have worked for a family-owned business. • Have your references readily available to submit upon request of the employer.

  7. More Reference Sheet Information From http://www.hsu.edu/uploadedFiles/Career/Sample_Reference_Page_Tips.pdf • Examples of references include former employers, professors, a coworker, a coach or an advisor. • Do not send references with your resume. Take your reference sheet to the interview. (There is some conflict as to whether or not to send your reference sheet with your resume. Some sources say yes send a reference sheet with your resume (http://www.hsu.edu/uploadedFiles/Career/Sample_Reference_Page_Tips.pdf), others say no – do not send a reference sheet with your resume (http://www.writeexpress.com/reference-page.html). Since there is so much conflict on the topic – here is the bottom line: if the potential employer asks for a reference sheet, send them one with your resume. If they say resumes only, do not send a reference sheet. If you are not sure, send one with your resume – better safe than sorry. • If an employer asks if they can call your references, let your references know that they may be called. Tell them the name of the person calling and the job for which you applied. If possible, give them a copy of the job description.
