  2. How it Started • Monica Lewinsky was hired as an intern at the White House in 1995. • Soon after her and Clinton started having an affair. • Lewinsky later talked about it with her co-worker Linda Tripp • Linda Tripp secretly recorded their conversations.

  3. Paula Jones Case • Lewinsky denied any having any relationship with Clinton. • Tripp later handed over the recorded conversations to Kenneth Starr • This led to wide reporting of the scandal. • The press was criticized for paying so much attention to it.

  4. Pre-Court • In April 1996, Lewinsky was relocated to the Pentagon. • Lewinsky began talking to Tripp again. • Linda Tripp recommended that she keep the gifts Clinton gave her. • She also recommended not to dry clean her blue dress. • Again, Tripp secretly recorded these conversations.

  5. Denial and Impeachment • During a press conference Clinton denied having any sort of relationship with Lewinsky. • The dress and recorded conversations proved otherwise. • He was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice. • Clinton was later acquitted of all charges by the senate and remained in office.

  7. The Arrest • In January 1972, five men were arrested trying to break into the Watergate complex • They had bugging equipment inside the complex. • They were charged with attempted burglary and interception of communications.

  8. The Cover-up • The FBI discovered a briefcase with the name E. Howard Hunt • This worried the Nixon administration • Nixon had his administration try to cover it up by destroying surveillance equipment, such as tapes.

  9. Accusation and Resignation • The final nail in the coffin was when Nixon refused to give up the Watergate tapes. • It went to court and Nixon was legally forced to give up the tapes. • To avoid being impeached, Nixon later resigned. • Nixon is the only president in US history to Resign.
