  3. I. Colonial Vietnam A) Part of French Indochina since mid-1800s B) Ho Chi Minh: (he who enlightens) worked to gain freedom using Communism C) Vietminh: fought against Japan occupants 1941, declared Vietnam independent

  4. II. Vietnam After WWII A) France reclaims w/Pres. Truman's support (why?) B) Domino Theory: if 1 nation falls to Communism, all will 1) US pays 75% for France war 2) Vietminh use guerrilla techniques (Tiger vs. Elephant) C) Dien Bien Phu: French last stand, outnumbered, they surrender D) Geneva Conference: Vietnam divided at 17th parallel

  5. POINT: Vietminh were VERY experienced engaging foreign enemies.

  6. III. Growing Conflict In Vietnam A) Ngo Din Diem: South Vietnam President, anti-Communist, but corrupt B) Vietcong: Formed by Vietminh in South who wanted to overthrow Diem C) 1955: Prez. Ike sends aid, weapons, & 900 advisers to train South Vietnamese

  7. June 11, 1963: Thich Quang Duc burns himself at a busy intersection in Saigon. He burned to death in a matter of minutes. “I was to see that sight again, but once was enough. Flames were coming from a human being; his body was slowly withering and shriveling up, his head blackening and charring. In the air was the smell of burning human flesh; human beings burn surprisingly quickly. Behind me I could hear the sobbing of the Vietnamese who were now gathering. I was too shocked to cry, too confused to take notes or ask questions, too bewildered to even think…. As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him -David Halberstam, NY Times (*He was protesting persecution of Buddhist monks by S. Vietnamese govt.)

  8. IV. Increasing U.S. Involvement A) Pres. JFK - 1) 1961: 3,000 advisers, 14 dead 2) 1963: 16,000 advisers, 500 dead B) Diem unpopular, assassinated 3 wks. before JFK C) Tonkin Gulf Resolution: Gave Prez. LBJ power to expand the war 1) 1964: Vietcong had 40% of S. Vietnam 2) USS Maddox, navy destroyer, torpedoed (although they fired 1st!)

  10. V. Air War A) Ho Chi Minh Trail: paths from N. Vietnam to S. Vietnam used to send aid to Vietcong 1) Agent Orange: chemical used to expose routes through jungle B) Napalm: jellied form of gasoline, create cluster bombs C) Air Raids were largely ineffective 1) Underground bunkers (pg. 959) 2) USSR support 3) More S. Vietnamese join war

  11. VI. Ground War A) Gen. William Westmoreland: orders search & destroy to drive enemy out, very tough! 1) Hard to tell who's Vietcong 2) Vietcong know geography better B) Troop morale decreases C) 1965: 185,000 troops 1967: 486, 000 troops

  12. VII. Draft A) 80% of 2.5 million who served had H.S. Education or less • 25% excluded for health • 30% deferred for college if grades up, end in 1969 • Poor & minorities more likely to serve • 3 % dodge B)First Living Room War: less media restrictions
