  2. In 1913 Russia celebrated 300 years of Romanov rule. The capital St. Petersburg was full of celebrations, flags lined the streets, important visitors filled the hotels and the people who lived in the city covered statues of the Tsar with ribbons and flowers. How did it all go so wrong??

  7. Source One On 1 August Tsar Nicholas II declared war on Germany. Russia didn’t do very well. 230,000 soldiers died or were taken prisoner in the first year. Source Two Russia was not ready to fight a war. They only had 4,600,000 guns for 6,500,000 men!. Source Three The railway wasn’t good enough to get fresh food and ammunition to the troops and could not get the injured soldiers back to the cities for treatment Source Four Tsar Nicholas II decided to take control of the army himself and went to join the troops. This did two things: He was now blamed for all the army’s defeats. He was far away from Russia and couldn’t control it properly. Source Five Back in Russia while Tsar Nicholas II was away his wife, Tsarina Alexandra got very close to a Holy man named Rasputin. The Russian people didn’t like her or Rasputin very much at all. Especially as Alexandra was German!

  8. Source Six From September 1915 government ministers were replaced very often, mostly when Rasputin wanted them changed. By changing the government all the time it made it very hard to rule Russia properly. Alexandra and Rasputin got more unpopular. Source Seven Petrograd, a big city in Russia, wasn’t getting enough food to feed everybody. They needed 405 railway cars of food to survive but were only getting 116. Source Nine By early 1917 the situation in Petrograd was awful and getting worse everyday. There was not enough food, prices were rising and people didn’t have enough money. The Tsarina Alexandra and Rasputin were even more unpopular! Lots and lots of the working classes (peasants) were VERY unhappy. Source Eight As the war went on more and more people crammed into Petrograd to work in the industrial factories. As more people arrived the food shortages got worse. Source Ten The President, Mikhail Rodzianko, sent Tsar Nicholas II lots of letters telling him to come back as the people were getting very angry but the Tsar didn’t believe him as his wife, the Tsarina Alexandra, was telling him everything was fine. Source Eleven Celebration marches through the city for Women’s day in February 1917 turned into protests against the government and the Tsars. Soldiers sent to stop the protests joined in! The Tsar was forced to step down and give up being Tsar because he had LOST CONTROL! When a Tsar steps down this is called ABDICATING.
