  4. The 4 Principles of Tea • 1st principle- WA= harmony • 2nd principle- KEI= respect • 3rd principle- SEI= purity • 4th principle- JYAKU= tranquility

  5. Preparation for the Tea Ceremony • You must scoop water with a bamboo dipper and wash your hands and mouth this occurs before entering into the tea room to “purify” yourself before entering the ceremony • You must wait outside until wooden clappers are sounded signaling you to come into the tea ceremony 

  6. What Occurs During the Tea Ceremony • The first person attending the tea ceremony drinks from the tea bowl and takes three sips, wipes the rim of the bowl and passes on the bowl • During the tea ceremony no trivial gossip, or flattery talk was permitted
