Major Event and Festival Impacts Seminar 6: Social and Cultural Impacts
Main Lessons from the Lecture • There is a growing body of literature surrounding the social and cultural impacts of events • It is suggested that we have witnessed a decline in community, social capital and civic participation in a postmodern society • Social capital is referred to as social networks, bridging and bonding, connectedness, trust and reciprocity and citizenship • Events and festivals can act as social glue but do they offer a panacea to all problems? • Events offer shared experiences, social economy and can develop community pride • But, are they just a distraction?
Discussion Topics • Critically discuss the positive contributions which the hosting of large scale events can have for the host community in terms of social and cultural impacts • Debate the notion that while events can provide many benefits they should not be seen as the panacea for all problems • Critically discuss how the social and cultural legacy of events can best be managed
