  1. CENSUS2010 LET’S MAKE IT COUNT ! Promoted By: MACOMB COMPLETE COUNT COMMITTEE

  2. COMPLETE COUNT COMMITTEE • Sectors of Macomb community represented: • WIU • Community Schools • Churches • Housing Authority • Local Industry • Landlords • Chamber of Commerce • Service Organizations • Print & Electronic Media • City Council & Staff • TASK IS TO GET THE WORD OUT ON CENSUS!

  3. Quick Census Facts • Complete count mandated by U. S. Constitution every 10 years • Original purpose was to determine congressional representation • Census now used for an amazing range of information gathering tasks • Only comprehensive way to know where the nation as a whole is headed; identify trends • It is strictly confidential

  4. 2010 CENSUS SURVEY FORM • Long form eliminated for 2010 • Now 10 basic questions per resident • Printed in multiple languages; will have forms in Spanish available in Macomb • “Be counted” assistance centers will be at City Hall and in Student Union at WIU • Forms mailed out in about mid March; return date is April 1st; there will be individual follow ups on non returns

  5. Why It Matters to City of Macomb • Various funding sources for the City are dependant on Census counts • Sales Tax • Motor Fuel Tax • State Use Tax • These funds supply City with approximately $120/person each year • An undercount of only 100 persons would result in City losing $12,000/year for the next 10 years; or $120,000 total !

  6. OTHER LOCAL ENTITIES DEPENDING IN PART ON CENSUS DATA • Macomb Public Schools • Direct student programs and services • Macomb Public Library • Purchase of books; staffing & operating hours • MADECO • Demographics vital to business recruitment/retainage • McDonough County Community Services • Home weatherization, heating assistance grants • McDonough County Public Housing • General funding allocations

  7. ADDITIONAL VITAL USES OF CENSUS INFORMATION • Federal & State Redistricting • Eligibility for a number of grant programs • Land use and infrastructure planning • Targeting of marketing efforts or specialized service programs • Private business locations & expansions • Identification of societal change; positive or negative, for informed decision-making

  8. State Perspective • For a period of several decades, population (and money) have been proportionately shifting from the Macomb area to: • Chicagoland • St. Louis Metro East • Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal • Parts of greater Peoria and Rockford metro areas • Other isolated “pockets of growth” in Illinois

  9. NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE • For a period of several decades, population (and money) have been proportionately shifting from the State of Illinois to places such as: • Arizona • North Carolina • Texas • Colorado • Nevada • California • Georgia • Florida

  10. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP AVOID THE POTENTIAL LOSS OF RESOURCES • Recognize the importance of the Census to us on a local level • Complete & send back survey form and be sure to count everyone you legally can • Encourage others to do the same • Notify city if you believe someone is not being counted, (be as specific as possible) • Pick up brochures or fliers; educate yourself
