SCHOOL IN SESSION – EVEN WITH CANCER School bolsters a young patient’s adjustment to cancer treatment In addition to school broadening the mind, it also heals the soul for a young cancer patient, CANSHALA will not only help patients keep up so they can return to school, but also give them a great emotional boost. Learning with their peers in the classroom environment and having caring interactions with teachers provides a sense of normality. 8. CANKIDS EDUCATION PROGRAM II. REINTEGRATE THEM BACK TO SCHOOL/ COLLEGE / SOCIETY –AS SURVIVORS I. KEEP THEM LEARNING DURING TREATMENT

  9. Childhood cancer treatment is long, between 6 months to 3 years. During this period the children, are deprived of regular education; formal or non- formal. They miss out on vital years of learning and development They lack the “normalcy of a child’s life” This impacts their development – physical, mental and social. It makes it difficult for them to reintegrate back into the school system at the end of their active treatment. The special school will help to keep the children learning in a child-centric environment It will provide continuity of education during their treatment period along with individualised remediation and therapeutic intervention as required Basic concept – CHILD LIFE DURING CANCER

  10. “School in the Hospital” – a service in the Cancer hospital or through an NGO – that ensures That the child is registered at the local school - Canshala Base line testing and educational and psycho-social evaluation is done an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed for him/her The child attends the school as and when he is able to. His learning is appropriate to his health. Attendance is not compulsory. Learning is through non-formal approaches and focus is on drama/art/music/therapy, skill building, self-esteem, vocabulary, life-skills, and the basic 3 Rs. Curriculum is outcome based. If the child is older and able to cope with the rigor of regular learning, tutorial schooling is provided. Creative adjustments are made for handling the workload, specially to cater to side effects, late side-effects and learning difficulties resulting from treatment “Homebound schooling” is provided to the largest extent possible for the times when the child is too sick to attend the school. This “homebound schooling” may be provided in the ward. Teachers from the Canshala will visit and provide the support for homebound schooling to the child. The local school/school in the hospital keeps the child’s school in his home town apprised and abreast of the child’s treatment, progress, and educational development CANSHALA - School in a Hospital

  20. Appeal from the CK Team “We set out to find place for ourselves in Mumbai, as our demerger from Indian Cancer Society meant leaving the Cubicle we had in their offices in Parel. Through Cankids Ambassador Arvind Singh’s good offices we met Additional Commissioner, Mr Adtani, who suggested we run a Special School for children with cancer, for the BMC. The project has developed fantastically and fills a niche that was sorely lacking for children with cancer. Coming to Mumbai for treatment The kids are loving it. They want to study. They refuse to do “art and craft’! Help us to make a success of the 1st of its kind - CANSHALA SurabhiKakar – Canshala Mentor (Hony) & PritiDhall, Regional Director Cankids Mumbai (Hony)

  21. CANSHALA – a way forward • The success of this first of its kind school will enable us to execute similar projects in other States, and work at the Central government level to advocate: • to State Education Departments to mandate schooling for children during treatment • b. To Amend Education and Rehab Laws of the country , to protect the rights of disabled or health impaired children with cancer • c. secure free and appropriate public education for the cancer child • d. and ensure that the child is given an Individualized Education Plan, permitted homebound schooling and a tailor made curriculum around his/her illness.

  22. THANK YOU! All set to go...
