  1. How the Body is Organized 4. Cell Organelles

  2. You explored the cell during the webquest Animal Cell Plant Cell Now we will discuss a few of the more common cell organelles

  3. Vocabulary: organelles Parts of a cell that do different jobs in the cell

  4. Cell Membrane • Can find in both plant and animal cells 2. Gives support and protection to the cell 3. Controls entry in and out of the cell

  5. Vocabulary: Cell membrane A part of the cell that controls entry in and out of the cell

  6. Nucleus • Large and oval in appearance 2. Controls cell activity 3. The brain (or boss)

  7. Vocabulary: nucleus A part of the cell that controls the activity of a cell (brain)

  8. Cytoplasm • Clear, thick jelly like substance that holds the organelles 2. Supports and protects the organelles

  9. Vocabulary: cytoplasm A part of the cell that supports and protects organelles

  10. Endoplasmic Reticulum • Network of tubes or membrane 2. Carries materials through the cell 3. The “conveyor belt” of the cell

  11. Vocabulary: Endoplasmic reticulum Part of the cell that carries materials throughout the cell

  12. Ribosome • Small round bodies attached to the endoplasmic reticulum or floating in the cytoplasm 2. Produces proteins 3. Looks like little ticks

  13. Vocabulary: ribosomes Part of the cell that produces proteins for the cell

  14. Mitochondrion • Bean shaped with inner membranes 2. Breaks down sugar molecules into energy 3. The “power plant” of the cell

  15. Vocabulary: mitochondria Part of the cell that breaks down sugar molecules to make energy

  16. Vacuole • Fluid filled sacs 2. Stores food, water, and wastes 3. The “storage containers” of the cell

  17. Vocabulary: vacuole Part of the cell that stores food, water and wastes in a cell

  18. Lysosome • Small and round with a membrane 2. Breaks down food molecules 3. Digests old cell parts

  19. Vocabulary: lysosome Part of the cell that breaks down food molecules and digests old cell parts

  20. Chloroplast • In plant cells only 2. Green and oval with chloroplasts 3. Uses energy from the sun to make food

  21. Vocabulary: chloroplast Part of the plant cell that uses energy from sun to make food

  22. Cell Wall • In plant cells only 2. Rigid outer layer that gives support and protection to the cell 3. Allows H2O, CO2, and O2 to pass in and out of the cell

  23. Vocabulary: Cell wall Part of the plant cell that provides support and protection
