Creative Problem Solving “One of the hidden rules of poverty is that any extra money is shared….In poverty, the clear understanding is that one will never get ahead, so when extra money is available, it is either shared or quickly spent. In poverty, people are possessions, and people can rely only on each other. The Adult Voice • Contrast with the Child Voice • Defensive, victimized, emotional, etc. • Ex.-”It’s your fault.” “Don’t blame me.” “You made me do it.” • Contrast with the Parent Voice • Authoritative, directive, judgmental, evaluative, demanding, etc. • Ex.-”You should(n’t) do that.” “It’s the wrong/right thing to do.” “If you weren’t so ______ this wouldn’t happen to you.” • (Bridges Out of Poverty; Payne, DeVol, Smith; 2006 Ed.; pg. 112-113) CARING COUNSELING CENTER

Do Something About It • You’re Their Voice • Build a Platform • Speak • Attend Coalition Meetings • Write articles, blogs, etc. CARING COUNSELING CENTER
