  1. Super Retelling Machine Read the article and then select the correct retelling. Edison's Lessons By Brenda Lasevoli, with TIME reporting http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/teachers/wr/article/0,27972,2055535,00.html Did you turn on a light today? The great inventor Thomas Alva Edison made that possible. He still inspires us today. Menlo Park, New Jersey, glowed with light on New Year's Eve in 1879. Thomas Alva Edison had accomplished what no other inventor had been able to do. He figured out how to make a practical, long-lasting light bulb. He didn't stop there. He also created the socket to screw the bulb into. He made the light switch to turn it on with. He even thought of the company that would supply the electricity for the bulb. Edison invented a whole system of electrical power. Edison began the electrical revolution. But one of his greatest accomplishments was the system of inventing that he helped to develop.

  2. In the 1870s, Edison created an "invention factory" in Menlo Park. He brought together a team of scientists and engineers. Edison said his team could come up with "a minor invention every 10 days and a big thing every six months or so." Today, companies such as Ford, Google and Intel follow Edison's example. What Have We Learned? Edison taught Americans how to invent. For years, the U.S. was the best in the world at innovation. But today, the U.S. is falling behind. American students perform below average on science tests. In 2009, only 34% of fourth graders and 30% of eighth graders scored "proficient" or above in science on a national test. "Our ability to create the next generation of U.S. leaders in science and technology is seriously in danger," says Alan Friedman. He helped oversee the test. President Barack Obama thinks American students should do better. He wants schools to hire 10,000 science and math teachers over the next two years. "The first step in winning the future is encouraging American innovation," he said in a speech last month. Edison expert Paul Israel says Americans have much to learn from Edison. The top lesson the great inventor offers young scientists is to never give up. "Edison never let failure stop him," Israel told TFK. "He knew he had to struggle to find answers and create something new. Answer the question on the next slide. Use the Retelling Machine to help you make the best decision.

  3. Which is the BEST retelling of the story Edison’s Lesson? A Thomas Edison created a system of inventing that doesn’t help Americans because students perform below average on science tests. Edison’s system brought together teams of engineers & scientists that created minor inventions every 10 days and major inventions every 6 months or so. The main lesson Edison teaches young scientist is to never give up. B Thomas Edison created a system of inventing that still helps American inventors today. He accomplished what no other inventor had been able to do. He figured out how to make a practical, long-lasting light bulb. We use light bulbs every day and they are really important. C Thomas Edison created a system of inventing that still helps American inventors today. His system brought together teams of engineers & scientists that created minor inventions every 10 days and major inventions every 6 months or so. Several companies like Google and Intel follow this model. The main lesson Edison teaches young scientist is to never give up. D Thomas Edison created a system of inventing that still helps American inventors today. His system brought together teams of mathematicians, scientist and engineers that created minor inventions every 15 days and major inventions every 3 months or so. Several companies like Google and Intel follow this model today to be successful American companies because of this.
