  2. How did President Wilson respond to the war? Wanted Americans to be impartial

  3. How did Americans respond to the war? Many Americans had ties to some of the countries in battle (country of immigrants). Many people came from Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Britain. Many sided with Britain and France because of the ties between those countries and the United States.

  4. How did Americans respond to the war? Other people felt we had no business in the war.

  5. The invasion of what country began to change American opinions about the war? Americans angered by German atrocities committed in the invasion of neutral Belgium.

  6. What three opinions developed about U.S. involvement in the war? Isolationism (war not worth entering) Interventionists (go to war and side with allies).

  7. What three opinions developed about U.S. involvement in the war? • Internationalists (not go to war, but take an active role in world affairs and help to create peace).

  8. Why did Neutrality give way to war? Many of the issues involved questions about shipping and international trade over the oceans.

  9. What issues were involved in international trade and ships? The British stopped ships and confiscated goods that were not previously considered contraband under international law (food, medicine, non-military goods).

  10. What issues involved international trade and ships? -The German government sank passenger allied ships with submarines (u-boats) Without giving the ships warning. The U.S. began to heavily protest this action when Americans were killed on the British ship Lusitania in 1915 (Germany later promises to stop the practice but starts again in 1916).This was a big cause of American involvement in WWI.

  12. What was Preparedness? President Wilson realized that war might erupt and decided to prepare for possible war. He did this by expanding the size of the army and navy (National Defense Act) and (Naval Construction Act).

  13. What was Preparedness? Wilson advocated peace in his 1916 reelection campaign, “He Kept Us Out of War.”

  15. Why did the U.S. eventually enter the war? U.S. discovery of a secret message between Germany and Mexico (Zimmermann note). The note proposed alliance between Germany and Mexico. Mexico could take back the land it lost to the United States , in the 1800s, (southwestern U.S.).
