  2. 1) Nationalism- pride in one’s country 2) Imperialism- domination by one country of the political, economic or culture of another country 3) Militarism- The glorification of military strength 4) Triple Alliance- the strategic alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy before World War I 5) Triple Entente- the strategic alliance of Great Britain, France and Russia before World War I

  3. 6) Archduke Franz Ferdinand- heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary that was assassinated by Serbian rebels 7) Central Powers- alliance during World War I of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire 8) Allied Powers- alliance during World War I of Great Britain, France, Russia and later the United States 9) Western Front- war-torn battleground in Northern France 10) Eastern Front- stretch of battlefield along the border of Germany and Russia

  4. 11) Trench Warfare- type of military strategy where opposing forces dig trenches along the warfront 12) Total War- a country devotes all their resources and efforts toward war 13) U-Boat- German submarines 14) Propaganda- the spreading of ideas to promote a cause or damage an opposing cause 15)Neutral- not supporting either side
