  1. D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930)

  2. His ideas • To him modern world (money, industrialism) seemed to have corrupted man’s emotional life. He thought the salvation of modern civilization lies in free expression of emotions and in true personal relationships, especially those of man and women in love.

  3. His subject and art • He wrote about miners, farmers, towns, country. He knew their feelings. Though he added little to the form of the novel, he developed a much bolder description of sexual life than his predecessors had done.

  4. His art • His choice of word, of details, is original, effective. He invented a language (symbolic and direct) in which sexual experience can be described. He had a rare eye (sensitive observation) for every movement in nature.

  5. His art:symbolism • His characters’ inner qualities of human nature are often shown in the description of nature. For example, when Miriam watches a sunset with Paul, the description tells their relationship:(to be continued)

  6. His art:symbolism • She went to the fence and sat there, watching the gold clouds fall to pieces, and go in immense, rose-colored ruin towards the darkness. Gold flamed to scarlet, like pain in the intense brightness. Then the scarlet sank to rose, and rose to crimson, and quickly the passion went out of the sky. All the world was dark gray. • Sons and Lovers

  7. His art: color system of symbolism • 1.Life, emotion, love: bright colors such as red, scarlet, gold, etc. • 2.lack of life, of emotion or love: grey and light colors,

  8. The Horse Dealer’s Daughter(ashortstory) • 1.The story is about the main woman character Mabel turning from death in life to life from death, which shows that people’s emotional life or love in life is very important.
