The heart is a vital organ located in the chest's center, responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. About the size of a fist, it consists of four chambers and is made from cardiac muscle, which does not tire. The circulatory system functions in three main ways: delivering essential materials like oxygen and glucose, removing waste products like carbon dioxide, and fighting diseases by transporting immune cells. Understanding blood types (A, B, AB, O) and the roles of blood vessels—arteries, veins, and capillaries—is crucial for appreciating our body's inner workings.

Pg 743 Colored Pics • Draw 3 different professions • Example:
Kinds of Blood Vessels • Arteries • —a blood vessel that carries blood • away from the heart. • Thicker • because of more pressure going through
Kinds of Blood Vessels • Veins—a blood vessel that carries blood • back to the heart. • Thinner • because less pressure • Blood inside is not blue, • it is a dark red
Kinds of Blood Vessels • Capillaries— • tiny blood vessels where substances are exchanged between the blood and the • body cells. • Only • 1 cell • thick
Venn • Arteries, Veins • Pg 75 • Fill in at least 4 of each
Blood in a cup • Fill up cup about a little more than half of up with - Corn syrup • Place in 1 marshmallow • Place in 1 sprinkle • Fill rest of cup with red hots
Blood • Is made up of four components: • Plasma • Red blood cells • White blood cells • Platelets.
Composition(Different Slide than your ISN) • ~45% RBC • ~55% plasma • <1% WBC and Platelets
Red Blood Cells • A cell in the blood that takes up • oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to • cells elsewhere in the body. • Your blood contains more red blood cells than any other kind of cell. • Made of hemoglobin • Protein that helps pick up oxygen
White Blood Cells • The body’s disease fighters. • Some alert the body of invasion • Some produce chemicals to fight the invaders • Some surround and kill the organisms.
Platelets • Tiny oval-shaped cells that helps blood clot.
Plasma • Most of the material transported in the blood travels in plasma. • ---it carries nutrients, proteins, waste. • Water makes up 90% of plasma.
