The heart is a vital organ located in the chest's center, responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. About the size of a fist, it consists of four chambers and is made from cardiac muscle, which does not tire. The circulatory system functions in three main ways: delivering essential materials like oxygen and glucose, removing waste products like carbon dioxide, and fighting diseases by transporting immune cells. Understanding blood types (A, B, AB, O) and the roles of blood vessels—arteries, veins, and capillaries—is crucial for appreciating our body's inner workings.

  17. Delivering Material • Most substances that need to get from one part of the body to another are carried by blood. • ex. Oxygen, glucose

  18. Removing waste Products • Picks up wastes from cells. • Ex. Carbon dioxide

  19. Fighting Disease • Transports cells that attack diseases.

  33. Red Blood Cells • A cell in the blood that takes up • oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to • cells elsewhere in the body. • Your blood contains more red blood cells than any other kind of cell. • Made of hemoglobin • Protein that helps pick up oxygen

  34. White Blood Cells • The body’s disease fighters. • Some alert the body of invasion • Some produce chemicals to fight the invaders • Some surround and kill the organisms.

  35. Platelets • Tiny oval-shaped cells that helps blood clot.

  36. Plasma • Most of the material transported in the blood travels in plasma. • ---it carries nutrients, proteins, waste. • Water makes up 90% of plasma.
