  17. Delivering Material • Most substances that need to get from one part of the body to another are carried by blood. • ex. Oxygen, glucose

  18. Removing waste Products • Picks up wastes from cells. • Ex. Carbon dioxide

  19. Fighting Disease • Transports cells that attack diseases.

  31. Blood • Is made up of four components: • Plasma • Red blood cells • White blood cells • Platelets.

  32. Composition(Different Slide than your ISN) • ~45% RBC • ~55% plasma • <1% WBC and Platelets

  33. Red Blood Cells • A cell in the blood that takes up • oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to • cells elsewhere in the body. • Your blood contains more red blood cells than any other kind of cell. • Made of hemoglobin • Protein that helps pick up oxygen

  34. White Blood Cells • The body’s disease fighters. • Some alert the body of invasion • Some produce chemicals to fight the invaders • Some surround and kill the organisms.

  35. Platelets • Tiny oval-shaped cells that helps blood clot.

  36. Plasma • Most of the material transported in the blood travels in plasma. • ---it carries nutrients, proteins, waste. • Water makes up 90% of plasma.
