  5. Quiz Changed to tomorrow *Absolute Dating & Relative Dating

  6. Let’s take another look at Absolute Dating

  7. Radioactivity 4. Absolute Dating with Radioactivity • Radioactivity - the spontaneous decay of certain unstable atomic nuclei

  8. Add to notes A. Radioactive decay – the process in which a radioactive isotope tends to break down into a stable isotope of the same element.

  9. B. Radioactive atom has an unstable nucleus that decays a. Radiation is given off b. Decay is at a constant rate c. Decay material is formed d. Half-life is the amount of timefor ½ of the radioactive element to decay

  10. So what is half-life? • This refers to how long it takes for half of the radioactive atoms to breakdown into the stable form that is not radioactive. • For example, the half life of carbon 14 is 5,730 years. After that time, half of the original carbon 14 atoms will have become carbon 12. • Every 5,730 years, half of the remaining carbon 14 is changed to carbon 12. • This means that after 11,460 years, 3 out of every 4 (3/4) of the original carbon 14 atoms will have become carbon 12.

  11. 2. Radioactive carbon dating a. C-14 is present in all living things • b. It compares the amount of carbon-14 to the amount of carbon-12 in a sample. c. Used to date remains ***** Earth has been dated at 4.6 billion years

  12. Which one is Absolute dating? Example: The car is about 5 years old. Example: Mr. Cain’s car is older than Mrs. King’s car. In this case, no real age has to be given.

  13. Let’s finish the graphic organizer Your group needs to determine where your card should be placed!
