Disinfectants • Any product that claims to “KILL” anything needs to be registered with the EPA • If there is no registration there is no “kill claim” • If there is no kill claim you can not legally say your product eliminates the organism
Disinfectants • All registered products must be used EXACTLY as the labels state they are to be used to validate the kill claim • Because these products “KILL”, every label states they must be used in accordance with label directions under penalty of law
Disinfectants • Tip #1 • You CANNOT disinfect a dirty surface! • Tip #2 • You need to allow the proper contact time! • Tip #3 • Most cleaner disinfectants require rinsing!
Disinfectants vs. Sanitizers • Disinfectants and Sanitizers both kill microorganisms. The primary difference between the two is the contact time required to kill • Disinfectants • Primary label directions usually call for 1 to 10 minutes wet contact time • Sanitizers • Primary label directions usually call for 30 seconds to 1 minute contact time
Disinfectant and Sanitizer Types • Hypochlorites (chlorine) • Quaternary ammonium chlorides compounds (quats) • Iodophors (iodine) • Peroxides • Chlorine Dioxide • Alcohols (EtOH, IPA) • Straight acids
