  1. Skeletal System Biology

  2. What do you know? • Take a look at the handout of the skeleton without labels (put your name on the top). • Label as many bones as you currently know. • *This will not be graded for accuracy, but fill in as many as you can, turn it in to the front tray, and this will give Ms. Graf and you an idea of what you know right now before we study the skeletal system.

  3. The Skeletal System: Structures • Key Structures: • 1. Bones – hard connective tissue that supports the body • 2. Cartilage – connective tissue that supports the body, softer and more flexible than bone. • 3. Ligaments – strip of tough connective tissue in a joint that holds bones together • 4. Tendons – tough connective tissue that joins muscle to bone

  4. The Skeletal System: Functions • Functions of bones: • 1. Support – internal framework that supports and anchors all organs. • Example: ___________________________________________ • 2. Protection – protect soft body organs • 3. Movement – muscles use bones as levers to move the body • Example:_____________________________________________ • 4. Storage • A. Internal cavities of bone store fat • B. Bones store minerals: Calcium, phosphorous • 5. Blood cell formation – blood cells are formed in marrow cavities of some bones

  5. Classification of Bones • 206 bones total in the adult human body • Types of Bone • 1. Compact • 2. Spongy • 3. Long • 4. Flat • 5. Irregular

  6. Classification of Bones • 206 bones total in the adult human body • Types of Bone • 1. Compact • A. dense and looks smooth • B. Example:______________________________

  7. Classification of Bones • 206 bones total in the adult human body • Types of Bone • 1. Compact • 2. Spongy • A. Composed of small needlelike pieces and lots of open space • B. Example:_______________________________ http://www.gla.ac.uk/ibls/US/fab/tutorial/generic/bone2.html

  8. Classification of Bones • 206 bones total in the adult human body • Types of Bone • 1. Compact • 2. Spongy • 3. Long • A. Longer than they are wide • B. Middle is composed of compact bone • C. Ends are typically spongy bone • D. Example:________________ http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/imagepages/9582.htm

  9. Classification of Bones • 206 bones total in the adult human body • Types of Bone • 1. Compact • 2. Spongy • 3. Long • 4. Flat • A. Thin, flattened and usually curved • B. Spongy bone sandwiched between compact bone • C.
